The sushi roll we ordered was perfect — topped with avocado and eel sauce, with fresh ingredients and great balance of flavor. It looked just as good as it tasted.
We also ordered the soup dumplings and they were surprisingly good — full of broth, juicy, and served hot. Definitely a pleasant surprise to find here.
My main entrée was the lamb chop, and it was outstanding. Tender, well-seasoned, and paired with crispy toppings and fresh vegetables. The sauce complemented the lamb perfectly — a very well-executed dish.
Service was quick and friendly, and the overall dining experience was excellent. Kanpai deserves five stars — we will absolutely be coming back!
Regarding the rice, I asked one staff member if it was Japanese rice. He said it was not and that Japanese rice is reserved for sushi. Maybe I should have gone to a more reputable restaurant in another town. I also wonder why this place appears first on Google Maps — I only read the good reviews and missed the critical ones. I probably would have skipped this place or just ordered the Americanised sushi like dragon rolls or Philadelphia rolls.
To make matters worse, the server came to ask how everything was. I was initially reluctant to share feedback, but when she probed, I explained that the rice wasn’t the Japanese short, round, sticky variety I expected. She then insisted it was Japanese rice, which contradicted what I was told earlier.
Lightly battered and fried to a crisp, the calamari was a great starter—tender on the inside with just the right amount of seasoning. It came with a dipping sauce that added a nice tangy contrast.
Kanpai delivered solid Japanese fare with thoughtful preparation and good presentation. The ambiance was casual but stylish, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. Great spot for small groups or casual dinners with a focus on quality.
