Reviews
We stopped at York as a resting point while heading to Scotland. I found this restaurant on Google map (hence I shared my contribution as my gratitude. )
I chose this as the menu sounds interesting and lots of them I never tried. If you are up to a good surprise, this place might be for you. Enjoy!
The food was outstanding. We loved the Wada Sambar, Masala Uttapam, and Paneer Tikka Masala, the paneer was fresh, the curry rich and creamy, and perfectly paired with garlic naan. The Masala Chai was the perfect finish and took me straight back to India.
The owner was very kind and attentive, always checking on guests and making sure everyone was happy. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the next day before heading home.
Highly recommended. Will definitely be returning.
For a change it wasn’t an overwhelming large menu, but careful thought out choices of fish, meat or vegetable dishes.
There were 7 of us and we all enjoyed various items from the menu all which were delicious. There were also a different selection of rice’s and breads, with each main dish recommendations which side goes best with it.
We all had empty plates.
The service was attentive without being overbearing.
I would definitely recommend if you’re after a delicious & flavoursome curry.
We ordered Tattu Dosa, which normally doesn’t come with stuffing or chutneys. Whenever we order it, we pay extra for masala aloo, and the manager (who is always excellent) ensures we get enough to enjoy with the small dosas. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there today. Instead, the owner served us (we know she is the owner as we are regulars), and her service was very disappointing. She looked unhappy to take the order, never asked about spice levels or allergies, and came across unprofessional throughout.
When we asked for masala aloo, my boyfriend even said we’d pay extra. We were charged £6.99 for a tiny portion — a complete rip-off (bill attached). The owner did suggest masala dosa with the masala served separately, but we clearly said we like Tattu Dosa with masala. If she had explained the extra cost, we could have chosen differently.
My boyfriend, being a local business owner in York, asked me not to complain in person to maintain good relationships. But the poor service ruined our evening — we left and went to Everest Gurkha instead.
Many of the glowing reviews here are likely from tourists visiting once; as regulars, I can say consistency and customer service matter just as much as food. This review isn’t about seeking discounts, only to raise a concern. Sadly, I can no longer recommend Kalpakvadi.
