Came after seeing a few videos on Kale’s Hale. Really delicious meats, huge spread of banchan/ side dishes (12+!), wasabi Wednesday for sushi too is incredible value for excellent food. My beers were 50% off on Wednesday. Didn’t know of the deal, but well-worth it for dinner.
Highlights: Wagyu was delicious (1oz is perfect, more is too much on the palate), jamón ibérico (lovely deep bitty flavour), hanging steak (super tender and rib steak-esque flavour), and boneless galbi.
Luau soup was unique, and an interesting fusion between traditional dashi flavour to a heavier, meatier beef and pork flavour.
Our server Jayden was fantastic. Friendly, helpful, enthusiastic and represented the restaurant very well. Impressive.
5/5 absolutely worth it
The restaurant has a simple and welcoming setup that feels very neighborhood oriented. It is not a large dining space, but the atmosphere feels relaxed and authentic, which adds to the experience. Places like this tend to attract a mix of local residents and people who know where to find traditional Hawaiian dishes.
The menu centers on classic Hawaiian favorites. Dishes like lau lau, kalua pork, and other local staples are served in generous portions with rice and sides. The flavors lean toward traditional preparations, which is exactly what you hope for when visiting a restaurant that focuses on Hawaiian comfort food.
One thing that stood out to me was how the food reflects the home-style cooking that many local families grow up with. The dishes are simple but satisfying, with seasoning that allows the natural flavors of the ingredients to come through.
Service during my visit was friendly and straightforward, which fits well with the casual environment. It feels like a place where the focus is on feeding people well rather than creating a formal dining experience.
Overall, Kale’s Hale offers a solid example of traditional Hawaiian comfort food in Honolulu. If you are looking for authentic local flavors outside of the tourist-heavy areas, this is a place worth checking out.
Our group had such an awesome time. The staff is above par, the food is excellent and the atmosphere lends to the whole ambiance..This is what I expect when I go to a true local establishment, Plus Chef Kale took the time to tell us “Hi” and proceeded to drop off little bites of his one-off local samples to try..He truly made us feel welcome and that he was so appreciative that we came to his establishment. I highly recommend going here. BTW, the prices are just right, and you definitely need to come hungry…
Atmosphere is so cute, servers were all helpful and friendly, food was DELICIOUS and the wait time was super minimal. Our table was set up before we arrived with condiments, sides and sauces- we ordered the AYCE for $32.99. I would have paid $50 for the meal, it was that good! (The Gauva pork was my favorite). Honorable mention: the mango mocktail was incredible. I have zero complaints, everything was perfect and super tasty. 5 stars!!
