The fish is insanely fresh and sushi rice is amazing! Chef Sunny is definitely the go-to for takeout Japanese food.
The only thing to note is the wait can be pretty long during dinner rush. Showing up 30 min later than the pickup time isn’t too far off.
My friends recommended me this place and while I was skeptical about the freshness from delivery sushi, I was quite honestly shocked at how fresh everything looked and tasted. Highly recommend to anyone who wants high quality sushi at reasonable prices. (Their tuna specifically is the best in town IMO).
Here’s my honest review:
The presentation was immaculate – they had cool little soy sauce bottles, everything was packaged nicely, had ice bags to keep the sushi preserved, and even included dashi broth which was a nice complimentary pairing with the sushi!
Each bite of sushi I had was great – each piece was thick and fatty, and I could definitely taste the freshness! There was minimal fishiness (I got a little bit towards the end as I ate mostly all of the food pictured lol). Personally, I really liked the huge california rolls as well – but I think it could likely benefit from maybe a bit more freshness (like more cucumbers, for example). Overall, I got all this food for ~$125 which I think is a very good price for high quality, fresh and handmade sushi. Would highly recommend and definitely check out their socials @kaisenhtx !!!
I ordered a variety of sets, and the bluefin chutoro was my absolute favorite. The engawa was excellent as well, and the inari topped with tuna was a standout. The hand rolls were especially well done—the seaweed stayed perfectly crisp thanks to the way it was wrapped, and the fillings were generous.
The packaging was incredibly considerate, with insulated bags and freeze packs to ensure everything stayed fresh and at the proper temperature. You can tell they really care about quality from start to finish.
I also appreciated the walk-up pickup service. The gentleman who greeted me was very kind, and the customer service overall was excellent. The eating area was spacious, though I do wish high chairs were available since i had my 1 year old, but thankfully i have a pretty easy child.
Overall, the food and service were truly 10/10. I’ll absolutely be back regardless of distance!!
I want to start off by saying I admire your hustle and dedication to making great quality sushi. I think there are a few things that I would point out to take you to the next level. To preface I have eaten at most of the good sushi spots in Houston that offer omakase and am familiar with high quality fish. At Kaisen I ordered the chefs choice and California roll to go via Uber Eats.
First, I feel as though takeout sushi is never as good as sitting at the sushi bars or doing omakase at some of the best restaurants in town. Regardless of how good the fish is, the second it hits the togo box, the warm rice heats up the fish for the entire duration of the trip. This creates sub optimal sushi that’s warm throughout, versus the fish being cold and rice being warm, the entire piece is just lukewarm and confused. This doesn’t just apply to Kaisen but all Togo sushi. Today that happened to my order at Kaisen. The fish and nigiri was just warm which led to a bite that wasn’t what I would expect of sushi at this price point.
sushi: the quality of the fish is great, I thought the ratio of rice to fish was almost spot on, I felt as though there was slightly more rice than I would like. The salmon and lean tuna was alright. Otoro was out of this world though. Would go back for just that. Overall 8/10
The California roll was good but I felt as though there needed to be a little more avocado. I don’t frequently eat California rolls so I couldn’t compare it. But it was 7/10.
Packaging: The package and presentation was 9/10, I saw other people on Tik Tok mentioning they had an ice pack. I did not. Wondering how that would’ve impacted the sushi itself that’s why I’m docking a point.
Price: I paid a decent amount for my order, soemthing to be expected of fish of this quality, but given everything else I talked about I don’t think it was worth the $100. 5/10
All in all I would really like to see this quality of sushi at a brick and mortar location that Chef Sunny opens. I think Chef Sunny would absolutely destroy it and I would be scared for other sushi resturants if he did open. For Togo sushi though you really can’t beat this.
I ordered Bento Set A. Let me break down my eating experience. For the price I paid, $75($69.99 before tax) in total, I do not think it is worth it for the quality I received.
My tuna nigiri had inedible sinew in it. I expected higher QC standards for $4.70 per piece. This is not something I have ever encountered in any sushi spot I have eaten at.
The yuzu zest, while giving a very freshing initial hit of citrus flavor, left a very bitter aftertaste. Too much was put on top of the salmon sashimi and the scallops to really taste the flavor of the sashimi itself.
The texture of the assorted nigiri is very soft, and I quite like the two on the bottom righthand corner.
The Kaisen roll was very nice, but the flavor isn’t too far off from regular to mid priced sushi establishments.
I would say that the portion size was large enough for me to feel full. But overall, I am disappointed of the quality for the price.
The slices are thick, the fish is FRESH, fatty, and DELICIOUS, and honestly? I like the no-frills model. Nothing is overlooked from a taste perspective – the dashi, soy sauce, and ginger are even delicious and is packed so thoughtfully. The rice is good, not too sweet, and holds together very well. I also never order California rolls… but I will order them from here because it actually tastes like real food and the rolls are super satisfying and the size of my entire mouth with a fantastic rice to filling ratio lol
This is going to be the best deal for the quality of sushi you can get in the Houston, and quite frankly, I’ve overpaid and have been disappointed by most sushi places since moving to HTX. I don’t think I will ever be getting sushi from anywhere but Kaisen!
