The place looks like a dump from the outside. I had to be careful that my car didn’t get stuck in any of the enormous potholes in their parking lot. Once you get inside, the place doesn’t look any better.
I was ushered in by a nervous creature that was very insistent that I place my order before looking at the menu, or something. The menu itself had the usual stuff–tuna rolls, salmon avacator, etc.–except the prices were all a buck or two or three more than you would have paid for this fish in the most upscale palace of a restaurant, like at a casino or something.
I ordered a spicy tuna roll, white tuna roll and some weird tempura thing with stuff in it. The white tuna tasted a bit off, the spicy tuna was slimy, and the tempura I swear had been made last week and then microwaved. I also ordered miso soup, which was pretty clearly made from an instant mix. In short, it was some of the worst Japanese food or sushi I’ve had in my life. You can actually get better sushi than this at an upscale Kroger.
With a very strange staff, an ugly decor, dirty feeling and dimly lit bathrooms, and worse food than all of that, this place needs Gordon Ramsay.
The tempura batter was all wrong, tempura should be light, fluffy, and crispy. It was certainly crispy but heavy and thick. The steak teriyaki was over cooked almost like beef jerky. The gyoza appeared as if it was pan cooked but had none of the crunch pan searing should have and was mushy. The hibachi steak was more like a fajitas, diced up and again over cooked. The sauce for the zaru soba was completely tasteless and when my dad asked if they could do anything about it the simply added more vinegar.
The softshell crab and the age dashi tofu were actually quite good but overall very overpriced. The service was decent though nothing to brag about. The servers obviously do not communicate to each other as 3 different people asked me I needed my drink refilled within seconds of each other.
I guess that we “ordered wrong” because we didn’t want to pay for the over priced, but well rated, sushi. In truth that’s a bit on us to not order the sushi, but we found not one but five subpar items on the menu. If the sushi is so great, they should just stick to that and stay away from dinner entrees.
