Finding authentic Japanese food was difficult for Eiji Kato when he first moved to the island of Oahu in 2000. After spending time working in different restaurants around the area, he took his love of cooking to the next level and decided to open Junpuu, a ramen-based Japanese restaurant for residents in the Honolulu, HI, area.
Junpuu translates to “smooth sailing” in English, which is what Eiji strives for every day at this ramen eatery. Inspired by his mother, who was a Japanese cooking teacher, he uses his experience to create his own version of ramen combinations that are truly unique.
Everything at this ramen restaurant is also made from scratch each day, ensuring fresh high-quality with every dish.
This snug, bustling eatery with outdoor seating offers unique versions of Japanese noodle soups.

Absolutely loved this place! The ramen was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced — the broth had incredible depth, and the noodles were cooked just right with that ideal chewy texture. Every bite felt comforting and satisfying. The gyoza and garlic gyoza were so good — crispy on the outside, juicy and well-seasoned on the inside, with a delicious dipping sauce that tied everything together. Great food, and great spot.

Super delicious and fast!! The cheese gyozas were simply the best. All the seasoning in the ramen made for such delicious broth. Everything was great and the staff were all really friendly. Google Maps takes you to an elevated parking lot, so go around the corner and park on the street.

Ordered Shoyu Ramen with an Ajitama Egg, Garlic Gyoza and Homemade Potato Chips. Was expecting something fantastic considering the rating, and also because whenever I passed by here I saw a line of customers outside waiting for a table. Read the “About” on their website and got even more excited – I enjoyed Mr. Kato’s story – of how he got started. Well – maybe because I have had fantastic ramen before elsewhere and/or maybe because I had too high an expectation for this place that – my tastebuds – all prepared for something extraordinary – found the ramen to be rather bland and normal. To be fair it was not bad – I’ve had worse. But it was quite normal – whatever “normal” means nowadays. Ajitama egg was good – probably the most “ok” out of all the food I ordered – but for an extra $2.50 per egg I expected it to be stupendous. Gyoza was also normal – with garlic flakes that tasted like plain tempura flakes. The sauce had no kick anywhere, either. The worst offender was the potato chips. I should have gone through other reviewer’s photos before I decided to order this. They were super oily, and there’s something about the type of oil they use – probably – that caused my tongue to develop an allergy reaction – minor, but definite. My grandmother used to make fresh homemade potato chips, so maybe that’s just another hurdle I happened to carry that they couldn’t jump over. It did not occur to me to write a review until all I had left was some chips – so that’s all I have – a photo of the oil-juicy chips. I am still willing to try other items, however – if I ever return.

We tried the garlic tonkotsu ramen and spicy tonkotsu ramen, the soup was so rich and full of flavour; the ramen portion was very generous, much more than the other ramen places I’ve been to before. Service was amazing too!! Highly recommended!

We loved it! The broth was the best I’ve ever had – I got the garlic tonkatsu. I just kept drinking it vs eating the noodles. They have a good portion in the soup, I was not able to finish the noodles. I appreciate they have a parking lot behind the store so when you have a car it’s not hard to get to. The inside was full when we got there so they told us to stay on the patio, and it was shaded, so that was fine. On this trip it was recommended we also go to another popular noodle spot in the area, and I will say Junpuu was hands down much, much better. Their prices are also very reasonable for this area, and they have a lot of vegetarian options with vegetarian broths available.

It’s a good little spot I got the spicy miso ramen with “level 4” spice. I ended up needing to add more spice and soy sauce to the soup base due to the lack of flavor. But the noodles and meat were cooked very nicely. We also got the gyoza which were a bit disappointing due to the lack of flavor. I would come again but I need salt. Service was quite good and food came fast!

After coming back from japan I struggled to find a ramen spot that was as good as over there. That was until I found this place! Seriously the Yuzu Chickan raman was amazing! You could taste the yuzu in every bite but it wasn’t overbearing, it was nice and subtle, helping highlight the rest of the dish! Would definitely and will definitely come back here!
Edit 11/2/25: I had the spicy miso today and it was delicious! Super dense and powerful flavors, you can really taste the miso. Im a bit on the bigger side and a normal size of this had me unable to finish the broth due to how filling it was! Great food as always!

I had a pretty mixed experience here. The service was friendly and fast, and the ramen was good, but not particularly amazing in the spectrum of Honolulu ramen. For the ramen I got their garlic tonkotsu and asked them to add some spice as well. The noodles were yummy, I added a tasty soy egg for additional charge, and the portion was a good size. The appetizers however, were so bizarre! We tried the chicken karaage which unfortunately wasn’t crispy at all- It was served in a very large cone shaped bowl so I think the stacked chicken pieces caused hot steam from the bottom pieces to be trapped and make them all soft. The dumplings were so odd, I genuinely am not sure if they made a mistake. It was labeled on the menu as “spicy cheese gyoza” which sounded great! Nothing could have prepared us for that plate of lukewarm gyoza covered in half melted shredded cheese topped with a very cold tomato and ground meat mixture sauce, which of course caused the cheese to not be melty and re-solidify. Ultimately the gyoza were lukewarm, wet and soggy with a very confusing flavor profile. I definitely would not recommend their appetizers, but it’s a solid choice for a lunch ramen.
