I’ve ordered from here on GrubHub, and always promised myself to try it in person some day. Today, my family and I stopped in for dinner and I’m SO glad we did.
For context, it’s myself, my husband, our 10 year old, 8 year old, and 4 month old. All of us (except baby, of course) ate until we were full! We had plenty of leftovers to take home, since portions served were generous.
A few months ago, we took a trip to Japan. We have been missing the authentic feel and taste of traditional food there, and since been on the lookout for more than just sushi… Jumak is the place for that.
The staff was polite and attentive; our server, Emma, even had a conversation with our 10 year old about plants! (Made him super happy!)
We each had something a bit different, and took a bite of each others to be able to taste everything… from Tonkatsu and Soba, to the Unagi and Hamburger steak. Every single thing was so so tasty!
The seating is also very comforting. The light is dim, and the booths are private. It was ideal for us as we are all on the spectrum with sensory issues. Even the music was pleasant.
We did end up spending a little over 150. Money well spent! I would absolutely recommend this place for a special family dinner, date night, or even a solo meal. I’ll be back with my mom and sister when they come to visit from Florida!

I absolutely love Jumak. The food is always amazing, never had a bad experience, the waiters are always so polite and kind. The atmosphere is perfect whether you want to have a family dinner or a fun night out with your friends. The fact that the place is open much later than most of the other restaurants is very convenient. Definitely a must-visit for everyone!

Drove from Bethesda to enjoy this great place. Staff is friendly and attentive. The tteokbokki was great. Enjoyed the Udon and Ramen dishes on this cold day. The Jeju tea and presentation of it was nice. Will come back again to enjoy more items on their menu.

This place replaced the old Kare Bar that use to be here, but they seemed to incorporate most of the old menu and decor. They added plenty of korean staples like tteboki and jigae. I had the tonkotsu and it was perfectly crisp, and came with plenty of sides. Service was impeccable, everything came out fast and we were checked up on often. Would go again 10/10

I was genuinely excited to visit this place, which made the experience even more disappointing. We arrived a little over an hour before closing, and the restaurant was nearly empty. Despite the cold weather, we were seated directly by the door. As staff left, a strong draft came through, making it uncomfortable to sit there.

We politely asked to move to a more covered table away from the door and were flatly told no, without a clear or reasonable explanation—despite multiple open tables and no visible reason it couldn’t be accommodated. Ordering is done entirely through a tablet, so this would not have added any extra work.

The interior is beautiful, but the lack of flexibility and basic hospitality completely overshadowed it. We felt unwelcome and uncomfortable and decided to leave before ordering. What should have been an enjoyable experience turned into a letdown. We won’t be returning.

This is my second time here at Jumak Cafe. I got the Katsu Curry both times. The food is tasty and good portion. If you pay with cash, it’s cheaper than card (3% fee I think). Staff here is friendly. Bathroom is clean.

Former Kare Bar has reopened under new management as a new restaurant in Ellicott City called “Jumak,” which means pub in old Korean. I tried the Beef Intestine Teriyaki and an eggplant dish (I forgot the name), and both were amazing. The combination of stir-fried vegetables, intestine, and fried rice cake was excellent. They’re still adding new menu items, and I’m looking forward to trying them all!

I ordered the Katsu Plate and the Hamburg Plate tonight — both were delicious and nicely presented! The Hamburg steak was one of the best I’ve ever had: super juicy and a generous portion. The flavors were great and everything tasted fresh. The katsu was top tier — perfectly fried, crispy coating, not greasy at all. The only small downside was that the katsu sauce wasn’t quite enough for the amount of katsu.
I know it’s mainly a bar, but honestly the plates alone are amazing — I’d keep ordering even if I’m not drinking. The staff was very kind, always greeted customers warmly, and made the experience even better. Also, being able to pick up my order after 10 PM is a huge plus. I’ll definitely be back!
