The tables were all reserved for dinner when we arrived around 5:30 tonight but there was plenty of window and bar seating available for walk-ins. I love the concept–the famous judges on the walls, the court-related terms for food and drinks…The space is beautiful and nicely designed in my opinion. My mocktail, the Innocent Brief was extremely refreshing, and not overly sweet. The shoestring pickle fries were good. A little too salty for my taste but my hubby loved them. His burger, the Cross-Examiner and my Bucatini Pomodro with Blackened Shrimp were the real showstoppers for us! I squeezed some lemon over my pasta to brighten up the dish a bit. It was delicious the way it was, but the lemon really transformed the flavor! And, his burger was so juicy and flavorful! Absolutely looking forward to our next visit!

It’s truly impressive what they have done inside judges. The staff was warm and friendly. They were attentive and the service was perfect. Hannah, our server, was wonderful and gave great suggestions and showed us around the new restaurant. What they did inside is so beautiful. All the details and love they poured into this place is so evident and I think it is a great addition to the Court Avenue District. The seating that faces 3rd Street is such a cute seating option.

For food – we tried the sweet corn ribs, shoestring fried pickles, peach bruschetta, and bucatini pomodoro. All of them were fantastic and we would get again. We also tried an old fashioned, off-menu cucumber shrub mocktail, and espresso martini and all three were very good. They have done a great job crafting a menu. We will definitely be back!

Super hip. Very instagramable place. Delicious food. Great variety of mocktails. Would recommend. Good service. Small menu, a little expensive but you’re paying for the atmosphere. I got the shrimp Caesar salad it was huge and delicious! The mocktail I got was the pineapple one and it was refreshing! Clean bathroom full of free toiletries! Would go back out with the girls! Great for a girls night!

Judges on Court Avenue delivers an elevated yet approachable dining experience that blends bold flavors with a lively downtown atmosphere. From start to finish, the meal feels thoughtfully crafted and satisfying.

Great options on drinks and cocktails. We had the Butter and Burden similar to an old fashion and the Innocent Brief elevated lemonade, both choices with loads of unique flavors to standard bar mixes.

The bruschetta appetizer is a standout and a must order. It’s packed with flavor, balancing sweet and savory elements in a way that keeps every bite interesting. The toppings are generous, making it a great dish to share and a strong opening to the meal.

The Grilled Chicken sandwich with blackberry jam offers a creative twist on a classic. The chicken is juicy and well grilled, while the jam adds a subtle sweetness that pairs surprisingly well with the savory components. It’s rich without being overpowering and feels both comforting and unique.

The Pork Tenderloin Torta sandwich is hearty and satisfying, delivering exactly what you’d expect from a Midwest favorite. It’s well cooked, flavorful, and filling. A solid choice for anyone craving something classic and substantial. I stated it doesn’t need anything, not even ranch. Coming from the guy who created “Midwest Ranch Lovers” Facebook page. That says a lot.

The ambience at Judges really ties the experience together. The space is stylish and modern with a warm, energetic vibe that fits perfectly into the Court Avenue scene. Hunter green walls and ceiling with law/courtroom decor throughout.

Our server, Ricky, service is truly what elevated the entire experience. He was fantastic, friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. He checked in at all the right times, made great recommendations, and helped create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Service like this makes a good meal even better.

Overall, Judges offers flavorful food, creative menu choices, and a welcoming downtown setting that makes it worth a visit.

Loved how different it was here! Tables were full, so we sat at the bar and the chairs were surprisingly comfortable. Service was fine at the bar, and the host at the front was kind. The pasta was fabulous, but the burger had room for improvement. No dessert menu YET (I was told it is in the works), but I look forward to coming back and sitting at a table with full service!

Some of the best, most unique food I’ve had in Des Moines in a long time.

We stopped by for a little date night. Host was gracious enough to try and sneak us into a table between reservations but instead we decided to sit up at the bar (those chairs are surprisingly comfortable!)

The cocktails were fabulous. Food was some of the most interesting and complex meals i’ve had in a long time. The blackberry jam on my chicken sandwich was divine and definitely something I’m going to use for home too.

And the prices were right on. Usually I scoff at a $20 burger, but the way it was cooked, plus all of the flavors, really made the price tag worth it.

Thanks for such a gracious response! I’ve already been back for a second visit and it was excellent—you and the team are doing amazing work. I’ve updated my review and added that fifth star because you’ve absolutely earned it!
As a fellow downtown promoter welcome to the neighborhood. We’re lucky to have The Judges here, and I’m excited to watch you all continue to thrive. See you again soon!

The Judges — Verdict: Downtown Des Moines’ Exciting New Destination
Walking into The Judges, you immediately feel the thoughtful design—a striking blend of rustic charm and modern polish where contemporary lighting meets cozy, lodge-like warmth. Some corners whisper date-night romance while others invite casual gatherings with friends. The beauty? You can show up in a suit or jeans and feel perfectly at home. That versatility is exactly what downtown needs.
Exhibit A: The Bruschetta
Toasted sourdough topped with Sweet Peach Marmalade, Pickled Shallots, Prairie Breeze Cheddar, and Fresh Basil. The flavor profile here is genuinely inspired—the sweet peach glaze dancing with sharp cheddar and tangy shallots shows real culinary creativity. This appetizer hits all the right notes and sets the tone for an impressive meal.
Exhibit B: The Double Bone Pork Chop
This is the showstopper. A 16 oz chop gets a 24-hour brine before hitting the grill, then arrives with mashed buttermilk Yukon potatoes and roasted root vegetables, crowned with house-made smoked peach and sweet onion marmalade. Yes, it takes 25–35 minutes—but great things take time, and this is absolutely worth the wait. When the marmalade melts into those creamy potatoes, it’s magic. Bold, flavorful, and exactly the kind of signature dish that gets people talking.
Exhibit C: The Hanger Steak
My friend declared this the winner of the night—and I completely understand why. A 10 oz cut gets an in-house chimichurri marinade, perfect grill marks, and comes with parmesan risotto and broccolini. The steak was cooked beautifully with incredible flavor. This dish absolutely delivers.
Exhibit D: Legally Pink Cocktail
Great name, great presentation. A refreshing vodka-based cocktail that’s perfect for those who enjoy classic flavors with style.
The People Behind the Experience
Our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure we felt taken care of—even thoughtfully packing up our leftovers. The genuine hospitality shines through from the entire team.
Tyson, one of the owners, took time to stop by our table, and that personal touch made the evening even better. I’ve known him for nearly 20 years, and I’ve watched him pour his heart into hospitality. You can feel that passion throughout The Judges—from the design details to the creative menu to the warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Final Judgment
The Judges is exactly what downtown Des Moines needs right now. A locally-owned restaurant with ambitious food, a beautiful space, and owners who genuinely care about creating something special for our community.
As a fellow downtown I’m genuinely excited about what Tyson and his team are building. Supporting local businesses is what keeps downtown vibrant and thriving.
Verdict: Guilty of bringing fresh energy, quality ingredients, and real hospitality to downtown Des Moines.
Sentence: Multiple repeat visits to enjoy everything this place has to offer.

We went here for our 6th anniversary. The restaurant was very lovely to look at and at our table we found a sweet note signed by the staff congratulating us on 6 years together – this was very kind and unexpected! Our drinks were great, we tied the seasonal featured cocktail Chai Tai, The Hot Seat, and the old fashion. To start we go the fall harvest bruschetta which was great flavor wise but we were left with wanting a crustier/crunchy bread. For the mains my husband got the Hanger Steak and I got the grilled chicken sandwich. Again flavor was great and interesting, my husband’s steak was cooked perfectly but the chicken on my sandwich was tough and difficult to bite into. We ended with probably the best lemon blueberry cake I’ve ever had, it was paired with these lovely cookie crumbles that we could not get enough of. We will definitely give this place another try for date night in the future!

Everything was amazing— we had the vegan quesadilla, which was even better than our expectations, along with a few different cocktails. Every single cocktail was amazing, and the atmosphere was even better! Like was our bartender and he was terrific! My only complaint was I wish they were open later
