This is my first time here. The food was DELICIOUS! It had me swaying in my seat. We ordered fried catfish with cheese grits, french toast, home fries, turkey bacon, homemade biscuits and a slice of carrot cake for later. I did notice on the menu automatic gratuity of 20% of groups of 2 or more. After receiving such great and attentive service, I didn’t mind. Both servers deserved it. I’ve added J’s Soul Food to my list of favorites. I will definitely be returning.

I learned of the spot today. I decided to go for breakfast since I was craving salmon cakes. To my discust, one of my salmon cakes was saturated with grease. I used napkins, a whole lot, on either side to soak it up. The home fries were sort of greasy but nothing extreme. I told the waiter to let the chef know about the salmon cakes. I honestly expected them to take a little something off my bill. They did not. I feel as though that was a slap in the face. I may or may not return. The only reason why I would return is because they have a separate bar section that seems like it could be a good vibe in the evening

Well I found this menu very unhealthy. Zero fruit options. A lot fried food. I ask for boiled eggs because I didn’t find anything in this menu.
The service was amazing. Samantha was very friendly and patient.
The most nice table and comfortable sit say : reserve but I was there for 30 min , nobody arrived.
I don’t recommend this place for people with dietary restrictions. Somebody who eats everything. Please visit

I recently ordered Salmon cakes with mac & cheese and rice with gravy. The flavors were decent—the Salmon cakes were a bit salty, and while I enjoyed the rice, I felt the mac & cheese could have been better.
The service, however, was excellent. I called in for a pickup, and the staff was very welcoming when I arrived. I loved seeing that it’s a popular spot for the elderly community, which made the atmosphere feel warm and inviting. Unfortunately, I found a piece of metal in my food, which was concerning. My immediate thought was the potential risk for someone else, especially an elderly guest. I hope the restaurant takes extra precautions in the future to avoid this.

JS Soul Food (Orange, NJ) is a true gem! Our group of 10 visitors from Canada stopped by, and we were absolutely impressed.
The food was perfect — especially the fresh, made-to-order omelets and a unique millet porridge prepared with a special house recipe. Everything was delicious and beautifully done. The interior is welcoming, the place is spotless, and the service was outstanding — warm, attentive, and professional.
We will definitely be back and highly recommend this wonderful place to anyone visiting Orange, NJ!

Found hair cooked inside my food. How disgusting is that!!! Took the food back the worker was rude about it.
Tried to make up some bs, and then had the nerve to say idk how that happened. I felt like she didn’t care at all. Will never eat at this place again. Y’all please always check your food before you leave. And where are the hair nets???? I am the 3rd person writing a review about hair in the food. Smh!!! I did wash my hands after touching that nasty mess!! French Toast & Chicken Platter

Believe the reviews… Believe the hype. The fried chicken is some of the best I’ve ever had. Tasty. Thick meat . So good and not greasy, but perfectly fries. And the fries are absolutely fantastic. Perfectly crunchy but not too much. Nice little area to dine in… It take it to go.

I highly recommend J’s soul food. The food was an 10/10. The chicken was fresh and full with flavor. The string beans were well seasoned and cooked to perfection. The mac cheese was super cheesy and delicious. The only thing that I wasn’t a fan of was the cornbread, it was very dry and tasteless. But the ice tea was very good, not to sweet, it was just right. Last but not least my waiter was very nice and kind.
