The spring roll is just traditional perfect! They actually saute the stuffing and the flavor is just full of taste and usually typically Chinese restaurant they all use the prepackage but not here! Over all I love it and the service was ok but they only had one American waiter and he speaks Chinese but he’s the most polite person and the owner should take notes and treat him right. I could of complain but I understand so I just felt bad for the poor guy running like a house and that way I’ll going a 5 stars.
Over all this place would not be missed and if I was local they will definitely be my go too!
We ordered SO much food because I just could not decide what I wanted. So here are all the things we ordered:
Lamb Soup with Handmade Bun – the broth is clear, and mildly flavored. This is NOT for the folks who are looking for the fiery sichuan peppers. This is a comforting, homey type lamb soup that shines in its simplicity. The radishes in it add a nice bite, and the herbs it’s garnished with add a fresh pop of flavor. The handmade bun is bland, but soft and chewy, and what you’re really supposed to do is pull the meat off the bones, stick them inside the bun with the chilli crisp provided and you have a xian bing!!!! It was DELICIOUS!
Chicken in Sichuan Sauce – for those looking for the fiery kick of sichuan peppers, this one is for you. Even then, it’s relatively mild. But EXTREMELY flavorful. The sauce is not so much a sauce as it is a poaching liquid that pairs REALLLLLLY well with white rice. This was a delight to the mouth.
Pepper Chicken Fry – this is more along the lines of the commercial Chinese food we ordered in its look and consistency, but the flavor was amazing and unique. My husband I absolutely loved it. The egg fried rice we ordered with it was simply divine!
We also ordered the chicken dumplings, the filling is very plain but flavorful. And we also ordered the crab rangoons – the filling is delicious, not too sweet just perfect!
The BEST part of the meal, for me, was the pot of green tea we ordered. It was the PERFECT accompaniment to our meal.
Our server was super helpful, and answered all our questions with a smile! Please keep in mind that this is a Northern Chinese joint, I believe (correct me if I’m wrong), and the food is meant to be flavorful, not overly salty and spicy. This is exactly what I would expect out of a northern Chinese restaurant! Loved it! Definitely coming back over and over again!
The service, well that’s a different story. You will see my 3 stars for service. That is likely generous. But it is well deserved. I would say by default the service warrants only 1 star. But the waitress? She is also the hostess. And the busser. She is doing 3 jobs with little to no support. J’s Kitchen is not lacking in service because the service staff is on their phone or otherwise could care less. It is lacking because 1 person is set on a monumental task that dooms her. She is drowning in the demands, ill trained to address them, and otherwise unsupported. I felt an urge to assist her, not just with my lonely table but with all of the tables.
Many other tables were full of life. I don’t hold it against them that they did not do their part to make her life easier. But they should have. The tables of every other patron were left a mess that required many minutes to clear and clean. I guarantee it only took her 1 minute to clear and clean mine.
Life as we experience it necessitates context. It is a holiday for many Americans. We let our world grind to a bit of a halt. And still we expect others to serve us. Maybe, just maybe: we ought to serve them.
J’s Kitchen gets 5 stars. Not because it is perfect. But because it is among the most human place I’ve experienced in my 3 years down here.
We tried the orange chicken and you can taste the natural orange zest with each bite. Very friendly and kind service.
Reasonable prices.
Their hot sauce with sesame is so unique.

The space has recently been converted into a Zabiha Halal restaurant, which is great to see, but unfortunately the cleanliness needs significant improvement. There were visible spider webs and dust on the chandelier, and the overall environment did not feel well maintained. The restaurant would benefit greatly from a thorough, deep cleaning to match the quality of the food. When we asked for spicy sauce they gave us oil (not something Chinese restaurant would give).
With better attention to cleanliness and upkeep, this place has the potential to offer a much stronger dining experience.
