For the longest time I’ve been hoping and wishing that JP’s would start doing karaoke earlier than 10pm — I have an early job, and it’s just not realistic for me to START my night at 10pm. But there aren’t any other better options in town either.
So you can imagine how ELATED I was when it was announced that karaoke would now be held at 8pm on Tuesdays! And I went, and the vibes were great.
Sure, the crowd wasn’t huge, but it was new and it takes time to build these things up. The energy was good, and a lot of people expressed the same excitement that I felt. And it was getting more crowded with each week!
But after only two weeks (at the beginning of week three) it was announced that Tuesday night karaoke wouldn’t be happening again. A range of reasons were given, from it not be cost effective (even though the KJ is literally doing it for FREE those nights) to it being slower than a typical Tuesday (even though it’s visibly way more crowded and lively than a typical Tuesday?), to it “driving away regulars,” which may be true, but this is how you get NEW regulars. I don’t go to JP’s super often or stay for very long when I do, but you can bet your ass I would be a REGULAR if Tuesday night karaoke stayed! And I’m far from the only one.
The last theory posited for why it was being canceled was that it was being marketed as an LGBT karaoke night, and people theorized that some of the regulars may have felt alienated by that label. I personally think that it’s GREAT to have events focused on creating queer-friendly spaces, and I think it’s HORRIFYING if the reason for canceling it is that the establishment is bending to the will of bigots. But if that IS the concern, then why not just keep it and market it in a more neutral way? Again, not that they should HAVE to market it differently, but I think we would all rather get to keep the karaoke, regardless of how it’s branded.
If they do go through with getting rid of Tuesdays, I’m BEGGING them to start doing one of the other nights at 8 instead of 10. I’m FAR from the only person that wants this!
(Also, side note, but it would be AWESOME if y’all got, like, one mic stand for karaoke. Some songs are hard to do with mic-in-hand)
