WHY you should come here? For the CHICKEN VARUVAL! and their excellent service!
Overall experience was very good. Once we arrived, the owner himself, Mr. Siva greeted us and had a small chat. Very pleasant man. Someone that you could sit and hangout and speak about anything. Gave that positive vibe.
My only concern was the price for the size of the fish served. Rm20 for a thin slice of tengiri fish which is rather very expensive in my opinion, given the availability of fresh seafood at a cheaper price especially in that area near the market itself. Anyways, others may have a different opinion. But I wouldn’t pay anything more than RM10 for a thin slice of fish of this size. I will return again but fish wouldn’t be my choice here. My fault as well as I should have clarified before paying the bill. Probably the next time. Haha but I dont expect extra service or refund.
Banana leaf was priced at RM8.50, came with 3 sides of vegetables (which i took a second serving) choices of curry offered were fish curry 5/5, chicken curry 4.5/5, onion curry 4.5/5, dhaal 3.5/5 (I wish there were some vegetable inside such as carrots, potatoes, radish etc in small quantities as the vegetarians would have a bite to their dhaal served over rice) again just my opinion. Raasam was given as a complimentary 5/5. Perfect sourness to salt ratio. Pickles, fried buttermilk chili and pajamas given as a complimentary.
Service was very good. Everyone is attentive. Even the owner’s son went over to tables to take orders. Which was very pleasant to see. They care about the customers. Service was very fast, but the food wasn’t cold. Everything was piping hot. 10/10!
The chicken varuval is priced at RM20 but it can be shared easily by 3 pax. The chicken chunks are big, juicy, tender and literally not much bones. This are pure meaty chunky delicious chicken varuval! One of the best I’ve had in my life. I’m very picky with food when it comes to quality and taste. This is 10/10! You can have this just over white rice and be super happy!
Do go and try and feel their hospitality with customers. Looking forward to go back soon to try their other dishes.
And oh! their Bru coffee was like an icing on the cake after a delightful meal! Perfect sweetness and it just seals the deal.
We enjoyed the small talk, friendly hospitality and how they bother to check on you as you dine.
In many regards, Jothy’s has purposefully made a lot of attention to detail with banana leaves cut to the shape of their serving plates and bowl shaped rice servings. They hallmark a refined approach on banana leaf rice.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Jothy’s Fish Head Curry Banana Leaf Restaurant, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience. This restaurant undoubtedly serves the best Banana Leaf rice in Sabah, and I dare say, the best in the whole of Malaysia.
The highlight of my meal was definitely the fish curry and dhal. The flavors were simply outstanding, and the fish head was cooked to perfection. Each spoonful of curry was a burst of spicy and tangy goodness, complemented perfectly by the creamy and flavorful dhal. It was a true delight for my taste buds.
Another standout dish was the crispy and delicious fried bittergourd and fried brinjal. The bitterness of the gourd was expertly balanced with the crispiness of the batter, resulting in a truly addictive combination. The fried brinjal was equally enticing, with its crispy exterior and melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Apart from the fantastic food, one aspect that really stood out to me was the impeccable service. It was clear that the staff was well-trained and dedicated to providing the best dining experience possible. Probably because the owner himself is often present at the restaurant, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. This personal touch definitely made a difference and added to the overall warmth and hospitality of the place.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Jothy’s Fish Head Curry Banana Leaf Restaurant to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience. From the delectable fish curry and dhal to the crispy fried bittergourd and brinjal, every dish surpassed my expectations. Combine that with the impeccable service and the presence of the owner, and you have a truly outstanding restaurant that should not be missed.
