The food at Josef’s Gyros downtown Appleton is legitimately great—some of the best gyros around. Slow-cooked meat that’s juicy and well-seasoned, loaded with fresh toppings, killer tzatziki, huge portions, and the kabobs/fries hit hard too. When it comes to the actual grub, it’s top-notch Mediterranean/Chicago-style street food in the Fox Valley—no cap, it slaps.
But the staff experience killed it for me. Walked in hungry as hell, and the guy behind the counter treated me like a criminal just for not having shoes on (flip-flops or whatever—it’s not like I was barefoot in mud). Zero customer service vibe, made the whole thing awkward and off-putting. Food’s amazing, but that kind of attitude makes you think twice. Dropping it to 3 stars because of the BS—probably won’t be back unless they fix the front-of-house energy. Shame, because the eats deserve better.

The food here was so good! The portion sizes are also huge. I ordered the large lamb gyro and it was very big. My sister ordered a small and honestly, that even would have been too big for me. We also ordered loaded fries, which were amazing, and a serving of baklava. The baklava was light and sweet, tasting of butter and honey. If you have nut allergies be sure to ask or read the label.
There is no seating besides a small bench to wait for your food, so be sure to have somewhere to go or be okay with eating in your car.
Overall very delicious food for a reasonable price.

Owner is so nice and I know they are not known for their burgers but the burgers are literally the best I’ve ever had! Always a hit!! My boyfriend always get the gyros and ALWAYS loves those, too! Fries, too, soo good! Love this place so much!

Small place tucked away in a small alley off of college Avenue but worth the walk. The portions are huge and reasonably priced. I did the small gyro and it was more than enough food…definitely did not need the fries. The service was fast and friendly. Got a craving for an amazing gyro in the fox valley this is the place to go!
