This is our local go to spot for food and desserts.
Really nice selection of breakfast and lunch. Daily specials. You won’t
The Homemade ice creams are worth the drive.
We always get the fish n chips, fried clams and homemade onion rings.

We’ve been coming to Johnson’s for years and it’s always a great experience. We recently came in on a rainy night, towards the end of the shift, and were welcomed with incredible hospitality. The staff was kind, accommodating, and made us feel genuinely taken care of. Food and service were excellent. The owner is a great guy—his kindness did not go unnoticed. Thank you again for having us, guys! We’ll definitely be back.

The food was excellent. For a party of 7, between the fried haddock, steak bombs, greek salad with chicken, fried clams, and fish sandwich, everything was delicious.
The restaurant is rustic, which makes it famous in its own right. The majority at my table were well over 70 and decided that Johnson’s is now the place to go. The ice cream is amazing and there are endless flavors. The atmosphere is relaxed and many families dine here.
Not as a complaint, but as a note of commendation: There were a few mixups in the order, perhaps due to youth, but it seems that the mature management cleared it up fast. Thanks for a nice meal!

I haven’t been here since I was a kid, and coming back was a treat. This is classic New England comfort food, fried seafood, burgers, chicken fingers, fries, dinners, ice cream, all the basics! And the best onion rings I’ve had in a long LONG time. Kind of limited parking and only a handful of family-style picnic tables though… Plenty of open seats when we were there, I’m not sure how it is all the time. But it’s worth the trip… If you love that kind of food and atmosphere as I do, having grown up with it, then definitely stop in.

Update on 8/2/25: I broke my own record today & went inside to order my lunch! (See below) I had a delicious cheeseburger, chips & a ginger ale for less than $10. Afterwards, I ordered a small hot fudge sundae with black raspberry chip ice cream, whipped cream, nuts & a cherry. As always, it was amazing!

As a child, my family used to drive by Johnson’s Restaurant & Dairy Bar in Groton, as we drove to & from our beloved 4-H Camp Middlesex in Ashby, MA. A special treat every summer was stopping for an ice cream on our way home. Fast forward MANY years & I still love going there for an ice cream. I’ve never actually had any food here , but I know that their ice cream is always delicious! I especially love their peppermint stick!

GF (Celiac Disease):

This place is not GF friendly. The only item on the menu that is offered is a salad. The salad was good but the chicken was questionable. My boyfriend got a roast beef sandwich and was not happy. Its a cold sandwich and one of the worse he’s ordered. The ketch up bottle was sticky and looks like it was never cleaned.

There is no service. It’s a simple as ordering, sitting down, they yell when your food is ready, pay, grab your food, then sit back down.

The place is cute inside but a hard pass when we are in the area.

Johnson’s is just awesome, a staple on Groton, and deserving of the designation! And the egg, bacon, and cheese sandwiches!

The best seafood and breakfast. I love the Mediterranean omelet with a bagel and the seafood plate. I live far away but whenever I visit this area I make sure to have the omelet or the seafood plate depending on what time of day. The staff makes you feel like family.

Seafood is fresh but unseasoned (to a fault). Prices are higher than eating seafood in Boston’s seaport district. Mixed feelings honestly. Staff is super nice, place feels wonderfully homey. Just not a place for cheap bites I guess.

Ahh Johnsons, you used to be so great. My how times have changed. I used to stop here for lunch often. I was in the area, and wanted to stop for a cheeseburger special today to reminisce, and it was a lot of disappointment.
– I pulled up just before 1 pm. Someone was out pulling down the open flag from the street. I asked if they were closed. He replied “no”, then mumbled something. I did notice the hours are open until 2 pm. I should have plenty of time.
– I went in, looking to the specials board and it was wiped clean. I had to interrupt the workers behind the counter from their bickering to learn what the specials were today. They eventually found a paper and read them off. 2 Hot dogs and fries. I’m in.
– It was $13+ for 2 hot dogs, fries well done and a medium drink. I looked at my receipt, and it said that I would have saved $.50 if I paid cash. Hmm. That’s interesting.. there are no signs telling of the credit card fee.
– I sat down to wait for my lunch. Someone put up the “closed” sign in the sitting area while I waited for food. It was 1:08 pm. Nevermind the people sitting in the corner… seems like an awful long time to prep to close.
– My hot dogs and fries were delivered. The hot dogs looked cooked nicely, scored and nicely browned. The fries were well done with plenty of salt. I asked the gal in cleaning tables about the credit card fee. She replied that it was something they cannot control, the machine just adds it. I replied it was not allowed.. and she shrugged then walked away.
– The dogs were terrible. Cheap, skinless franks that were flavorless. The buns were toasted, and they were cooked nicely, but no crunch of the natural casing, no flavor. All this for $13+!

My advice, drive on. The burgers here used to be great, but the hidden fees, wonky closing times/closing practices are not worth the hassle. The workers general disinterest in anything except their gossip and themselves also make it unpleasant. The signs all over telling me that it is hard to find workers, so please be kind to the ones that show up should have warned me…
