On a recent road trip with my current side chick, we stumbled upon Joel’s BBQ. We smelled a deep, earthy, wood-fired aroma upon arrival at exit 661, I-10, a smoky essence, hints of mesquite/pecan/oak.
The meats rich, savory scent, fatty richness, paired with its rendered glory, pepper and spice rub, is amazingly delicious. The BBQ Sauce is amazingly tangy, with a hint of sweetness, and a smooth comforting flavor.
The potato salad pairs well with the brisket. The potato salad is a tangy counterpoint, creamy cool, vinegary zing, bright, fresh herb infused with a golden mustard accent…zesty flavor in each bite. There are a fee tables for dining in inside, but there is also, a dining hall next door that is full of tables and generous seating, to enjoy your BBQ meal, this is also where the restrooms are located..

This place gives Texas BBQ a bad name. This photo is the ‘regular size’ sliced beef sandwich. I expected a bun, but it was on two slices of dry white bread! Asked for pickles and onions on the side, but they were on the sandwich. Meat was tough and didn’t even cover the entire 2 slices of bread I had to spit some of it out because I couldn’t chew it. No flavor either. Was charged $.50 for a glass of water. Sandwich cost $7.10. BEEARE!

I usually stop in Joel’s to order a pound of ribs, BBQ Sauce, and potato salad. I have enjoyed the food there for many years! I definitely recommend eating there if you are coming through Flatonia on I-10 or visiting.

On a trip from Australia we stopped in Flatonia. Got the Brisket and Sausage. The food was outstanding and the service even better. Listening to Joel talk to his customers and explaining his offerings was fantastic. 10/10!

Disappointing Texas BBQ. The brisket and chicken were as dry as their customer service. The portion of potato salad was small, and the beans were nothing special. The separate indoor and outdoor seating area was nice.

This place has gone downhill!!!!! Man that took our order was not friendly. When our food arrived, it looked dry, coleslaw and potato salad looked store bought. The brisket had ZERO flavor, completely dry and chewy. The chicken was beyond dry and the ribs were less than mediocre. My friend threw away her entire $18.95 brisket plate. While trying to eat, the man who took our order had his cell on speaker phone and we had to hear all about his fence. Overall horrible experience. Too bad it’s not like it used to be 25 years ago. I will never stop there again, beyond disappointing!

Just stopped in for a quick bite. Not only was I blessed with amazing moist, fatty and flavorful brisket, but the chicken and sausage was delicious. I watched the owner hold a present and passionate conversation with 5 customers whom he knew all their names. For starters, service is top tier, the food was just bonus blessing. If you’re traveling I10. Stop early and don’t settle for the beavers BBQ up the road. Exit 661 just north west of the intersection. Thank you for having me.

The prices are right, the food is good, and Joel’s Bar-B-Q is located right off IH-10. Located between Houston and San Antonio.
There is lots of table space to eat and plenty of parking. Our brisket and sausage plates were great. Honestly, it’s one of the best tasting sausages I have tasted. The BBQ CHICKEN I thought was dry, and the beans were slightly under cooked but had very good flavor. The turkey sandwich was also good.
What didn’t give Joel’s Bar-B-Q 5 stars was their customer service. There were two ladies taking orders on this Sunday afternoon. A younger lady took an order for JacQue #1 and had 5 people on that order. Then that same group ordered another plate. Our daughter JacQue #2, buying our lunch plates, and there were 7 of us eating 6 plate lunches and a turkey sandwich. The lady taking our order was older, and as mentioned our daughters name is also JacQue, and the mix-up was on. When the orders took long, we inquired. For the most part, JacQue #1 ordered pounds of food but not plates but a sanwich. JacQue #2 ordered plates, not pounds, and a turkey sandwich. Once everything was sorted out, we were missing the turkey sandwich and pint of potato salad. When this was brought to the ladies’ attention, they started questioning us like we were trying to cheat them. You can see that this incident was a coincidence. But the way they interrogated my daughter, going over the recite item by item was a bit much.
Again, great food, I’d stop by again, just hoping the attitudes of the cashiers get adjusted.

Well well right of the bat we were not welcome at this TX BBQ joint. The woman who was taking our orders was possibly having a bad day, but considering her overall attitude her way of living is the problem that she takes out on customers. So so rude and inconsiderate. Asked for the bathroom (as we were customers), she said there is no available bathroom on site. Which was a LIE big one mind you. Other customer told us that restrooms were located outside the bbq joint. Ok. My husband proceeded to ask her something, and she turned her back and walked of like we were not even there. Quality of the food is mediocre. Prices are decent. Quantities are questionable. You get way less than a normal considerable portion would be expected. Pass this place it just NOT IT.
