Service and ambiance were great — truly no complaints there. We ordered wine, bread and pickles, and fries. The fries were honestly a 10/10. However, the rest of the meal went downhill from there.

I tried their famous lobster spaghetti, which is $75, and it was incredibly underwhelming. Very little sauce, no depth of flavour, nothing “wow” about it at all. Just extremely mid, especially for the price. The cake we ordered for dessert was also disappointing — overly sweet salted caramel and an overall unpleasant taste.

Overall, the meal itself was a 5/10 at best.

But the aftermath was the real issue.
I experienced the worst case of food poisoning I have ever had — violent vomiting, severe nausea, and symptoms consistent with a food-borne illness, not just mild food poisoning. It has been absolutely brutal. When cooking with seafood, especially shellfish, the standard of care must be extremely high. Whatever happened here, something was clearly very wrong.

I will never come back. No restaurant is worth going through what I’m dealing with right now.

This was truly a fantastic experience from the food to the service and ambience. The stacked crepes and foie gras were amazing. The service was spectacular; our server was so welcoming and nice to talk to, despite the fact that the restaurant was packed. It was genuinely a joy to eat here and I will 100% be back.

it’s almost a you like it or you dislike it kind of place. theres no in between. and in montreal, when you are spoilt for choices, the in betweens fall behind.

joe beef on the other hand, was absolutely spectacular. having eaten at the so called top spots around the city, nothing is as good as joe beef (as of now).

the oysters were specifically chosen, 3 different types to be exact, from places like merasheen bay, cheebooktook and fiona’s fury (from PEI). where each oyster takes up to 4-5 years to get to that size.

their version of the double down was phenomenally decadent and sinful. two slabs of fried foie gras splashed with maple syrup. if au pied di cochon was foie gras heaven, this must be the stairs leading up to that.

their iconic lobster pasta, incredible. one of the best lobster pasta ive had. even across italy, this stands out to me. the meat was cooked perfectly, the sauce on the pasta was rich yet not overpowering. and the bacon gave it a bite that did not take too much away from the seafood.

to end it off, i had this pistachio eclair. it was crunchy and had right amount of sweetness.

the cocktails was good too and not too pricey (anything <$20 in a setting is ok to me).

service was great and i love how they give you an entire pitcher of water so you need not constantly ask for more water.

i sat at the bar and JJ took great care of me, helping me to check on my pasta when it was taking some time to come.

overall, an excellent place and it really lives up to the hype as on of montreal’s most iconic institutions. cant wait to be back.

One of the best meals and experiences I’ve ever had.

First the food – We had the raw scallop, escargot, lettuces, rabbit, lobster spaghetti and the Marjolaine for dessert. Flavors were complex yet clear, rich and dense without being overly heavy, beautifully crafted, cooked perfectly. We hesitated to order the lobster spaghetti wondering if it was just online hype but we were not disappointed in the slightest – perfect al dente cook on the pasta with a beautifully creamy and rich bisque-like sauce. The rabbit was so bold, rich and complex it was truly one of the most unique dishes I’ve ever had. But the raw scallop to start honestly stole the show. So fresh and vibrant – excellent way to start the meal. Don’t sleep on the lettuce either it was a great refreshing compliment to a rich meal. You also just have to face palm yourself in amusement when you have such an incredible, unique and special dinner then make it to dessert and casually order the signature cake with a cappuccino and think “wait is THIS the best thing??”

The atmosphere – everything feels so intentional and meticulously chosen/placed yet completely unpretentious. The lighting is excellent and comfortable. Each room with slightly different character. The antiques, art, lamps, wall papers, etc. communicate the neighborhood’s rich history as a former antique/furniture area.

The service – we sat at the bar and at first said that we wish we could have scored a table and now I never want to sit anywhere else. The entire bar team was absolutely excellent. Our server – Edouard I believe was is name – was absolutely fantastic guide through the menu and took our experience to the next level. Made suggestions, helped us pair drinks, coursed the meals out at a perfect pace, chatted with us and had us laughing and truly just took our entire experience to the next level. Ordering here is NOT easy, I wish I could have had everything and I always suffer from order envy – but Edouard helped us craft a perfectly balanced and complete meal. He also shared with us the history of the neighborhood and “Joe Beef” himself which was fascinating and special. The other server behind the bar – JJ – was equally kind and charismatic and after we told them we were celebrating our anniversary and what we enjoyed doing the entire bar team seamed to come together to write us a list of recommended bars, restaurants and places to see music.

Not only will be we back… this place has me wanting to move to Montreal.

Culinary excellence was expected and Joe Beef delivered. One of the best meals of my life.

I didn’t know Escargot could be made the way they did it. The snails were cooked beautifully, garlic butter was balanced and the bread was the greatest accompaniment to this dish.

Hanger steak on Joel Robuchon style potatoes with a peppercorn sauce. Flavours were on point in every aspect of this dish. Executed with great skill and respect to tradition.

Shrimp cocktail like how Jesus himself would’ve wanted it.

The Gateau Marjolaine reminded me that there is continuity in culinary arts.

Long live Joe Beef!

This was our first time in Montréal and we had a fabulous time. This was the best meal of our trip by far and probably one of if not the best meal we have ever had. The food was incredible, the côte de bœuf was to die for and our waiter was so kind and has the best wine pairing suggestions. The atmosphere was so lovely and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Thank you Joe beef! We will definitely be going back.

Joe Beef has a solid reputation and I can see why people like it, but it didn’t blow me away. The space itself is lovely. Dim lighting, vintage touches, and that classic Montreal bistro charm make it a cozy, intimate atmosphere that’s easy to settle into.

We ordered:

• Oysters
• Escargot
• Hanger steak: this was the highlight. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare, tender and their peppercorn sauce tied everything together nicely.

Service was genuinely excellent. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel relaxed.

It’s a good spot with great service and a nice vibe. The food was decent. I’d come back for sure but it’s definitely not a must-visit. But if you’re in the area and curious, it’s still worth checking out.
