In times of loss, it’s often the smallest details—the favorite song, the well-worn hat, the dessert someone always asked for—that bring us closest to the ones we miss. For our dear friend who died Monday, one of those details was simple, Southern, and full of comfort: “Coconut Cake.”.
When we learned from our friend’s wife that coconut cake was his favorite dessert we knew we wanted to honor that memory in a way that felt personal and heartfelt. So, we ordered a two‑layer coconut cake to be delivered on Friday. Our hope is that, after the funeral, they’ll have a quiet moment to sit together, share a slice, and feel his presence in the sweetness he loved so much.
At the wife’s suggestion, we placed the order with Jody’s Bakery & Caterie–a local bakery–and a place she trusted. The lady who helped us was kind, patient, and understanding—exactly the sort of person you hope to encounter when doing something meaningful for a grieving family. She assured us the cake would be ready on Friday, and we could almost hear the smile in her voice as she took the order.
Now, we know full well that no bakery—no matter how talented—can out‑bake our friend’s wife who is known to be quite the baker, herself. But this cake isn’t meant to compete. It’s meant to comfort. It’s meant to carry a memory. It’s meant to be a small, edible reminder of a man who was deeply loved as a husband, father, grandfather, and member of our own Mountain Music Memories family.
Our hope is simple:
That as this family share this dessert they feel wrapped in the love and embrace of every member of their Mountain Music Memories family.
That every bite brings a moment of peace.
That every future bite of coconut cake—whether baked at home or bought from a bakery—brings a smile, a story, or a warm memory of our friend.
Because love doesn’t disappear, it lingers in the traditions we keep, the foods we share, and the memories we hold close.
And for our friend’s family, may coconut cake forever be one of those sweet reminders of a life well lived and a man deeply cherished.
Thank you, Jody’s for your help in this matter. I would highly recommend Jody’s to anyone we live in Alabama and you can bet hospitality and courtesy are still alive in Hattiesburg.
The assortment of baked goods and pastries and quiche are delicious and beautiful too! And the shrimp linguine was absolutely scrumptious.
I highly recommend adding this shop to your road trip itinerary — or better yet — go out of your way to pick up some of this yumminess! It’s definitely worth it.
I recently had the cream cheese king cake and sausage-cheese bread and decadent cookies!
This bakery feels like home with every bite, and their consistent quality over the decades is unmatched. If you’re in Hattiesburg, don’t miss out on this local treasure! ❤️

I was honestly shocked to hear something that came across as so dismissive and racially insensitive. Especially after having to wait for 5 minutes to be serviced! It made what is usually a positive, family-friendly experience really uncomfortable. I truly hope this is something that gets addressed, because customers shouldn’t have to hear comments like that.
