Although my plan was to start at the Berkeley end of Solano and eat my way down through the Albany end, I’d heard that Jodie’s Restaurant …

Been to Jodie’s a few times. It’s like eating in your grandparents little old kitchen. It’s home cooking with a bit of soul. Like I said, stuff your grandparents would make. Grits, hashbrowns, very excellent mystery soups, bacon, sandwiches, anything your grandma/grandpa could whip up. This is not a fine dining experience. It’s a VERY small place, can probably only fit 7-8 people at a time. This is a place to come to if you want some homestyle cooking and a staff that treats you like your grandparents would. If you want fancy coffee and pastries and stuff like that this is not the place. If you want to get fed with real food, this is the place.

Foodies don’t “get” this hole-in-the-wall place. Jodie makes home style food, slowly and deliberately. Don’t come if you’re in a hurry, don’t come to be an ironic hipster dweeb, and for God’s sake don’t put any seasoning on the food until you’ve tasted it. This place is a neighborhood experience, the value of which seems to elude the Berkeley overflow folks who populate upper Solono Ave. No “vegan organic goodies” here!

jodie’s isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience. crammed at the six-seat counter, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to help clean up, pass around coffee, or even take orders to the tables set up outside on nice days. but this tiny hole in the wall serves what is likely to be the best fried chicken you will ever eat (weekends only)…plus some truly exceptional breakfast creations. i’m hesitant to praise the place so highly, since that means it might be harder to get a seat. but jodie deserves the recognition for his exceptional, no-frills, always-friendly dining experience.

A hole-in-the-wall that offers some yummy southern food. Jodie was a great host, though the food was not the healthy side. The line is usually extremely frustrating. Very well hidden local gem.
