Reviews
I have never eaten with a group where everyone loved every single item that was ordered, from the appetizers, to the main course and finally dessert. There was not one item that was disliked. The lamb, the duck, the salmon and the chicken were so flavorful that you could taste it when you put it in your mouth before you actually took a bite! The sticky rice was fantastic! The flavor of the food was enhanced by the various sauces that came with each dish.
To top it off, all of the drinks (non-acoholic) were delicious and offered a very smart after taste. The desserts were just too good! I would like to write a much longer review but just do not have the words to describe how wonderfully amazing all of the food was. If you decide to come here and dine, I guarantee you that you will be hooked and have a serious urge to return to the restaurant at least once every month. So beware, you have been warned.
We started off with the Tom Kha Gai which was absolutely unbelievable. A rich, creamy, yet remarkably vibrant flavor came through this coconut based soup and I would say it’s a must-get item on the menu! Especially in the cold winter, it warmed us up and tasted so good.
For our entrees, I got the “chef’s special” crispy duck in tamarind sauce, served over crispy sweet potato. The duck was impressively crispy and the strong tangy tamarind glaze worked beautifully with it. On the other hand, I did not enjoy the sweet potato that it was served over. It was almost like thin sweet potato patties that were battered and fried, and having two fried foods on top of each other like that was a little much. Also, the sweetness of the potato was too much with the sweet/tang of the tamarind. It wasn’t bad, but did detract from the excellent duck. And then the three raw slices of kiwi on top was visually interesting, but also did not pair well with the flavors of the dish so it was kind of funny.
Our other entree was the chicken pad see ew. The charred flavor on the grilled chicken was great and the dish was nice, but we wished there had been a bit more flavor from the sauce- it was somewhat dry and could have benefitted from more sauce. Tasty overall, but didn’t differentiate much from other Thai places.
The servers themselves were outstanding, friendly and helpful. However, the restaurant was very packed and busy and there seemed to be only three people seating, serving and bussing. So we did have to wait for a while to get our check since they were occupied trying to keep up with all the customers.
Overall I definitely recommend JJ! Mostly for the Thai food side of things. Although I didn’t personally have any of the more standard French classics on the menu, they seemed pretty “old school” and catered to more of the senior clientele that the restaurant attracts. Not a bad thing by any means, just something to be aware of.
To finish we had the mango sticky rice, but this was only OK. Everything else was phenomenal though so totally forgiven 🙂 will definitely be back and was good value for money!
