First time going. Friend and I jumped in the car to play lottery and ended up in Alabama for a day trip.

Jinsei is a contemporary Asian American cuisine with a flare. It has a sushi bar, bar area, covered outside area, and dining area. The dining area is small so I suggest calling for reservations or going early because they are usually busy. There is something on the menu for everyone. If you are not a sushi person, there are a large variety of other entrees you can choose from. Everything I have had is absolutely wonderful. Every time we go, we have great service. They have even customized drink orders and sushi orders just for our liking. If you live or are visiting the Birmingham area, I highly suggest this little gem! It is worth the visit!

Sushi was edible but very fishy and lacking flavor. Tried a couple of cocktails and all were disgusting. The table next to us brought their huge golden retriever and its hair kept flying all over. Several hairs landed on our table while we were trying to eat. The manager and servers kept petting the dog and then bringing food out to tables. It was super unappetizing and just gross! Will not be coming back here. So many better sushi places in Birmingham!

this was a really disappointing experience… shiki was closed and i didn’t know until i literally pulled up, so this was my second choice. the maitre d or whoever he was seemed really uninterested in seating people, and looked annoyed i didn’t want to be touching elbows with strangers at the bar. the rock shrimp was okay, kind of soggy and too citrusy, and the white fish on the atsui was weird. texture and taste. it felt slimy each piece i ate, so i drowned it in wasabi. don’t think food poisoning but i don’t feel well after eating it. it’s also obscenely expensive for the food to be this mid quality. $50 for one drink, half order of shrimp, and the least expensive house roll. service was good tho, kind of slow but friendly.

The BEST sushi in town! We ate $400 worth of food for 4 person. A little bit over priced for the quality compared to bigger cities. But it’s much better than any sushi restaurant in Birmingham!!

Great service and good food. They have a gluten free menu and I have celiac, so it was safe for me. Definitely recommend if you want some good sushi.

This place has really gone down hill. The rolls fall apart, not tightly rolled. The fish is of questionable quality… very lackadaisical. For the price point they charge it is no where near worth it. You will get same quality sushi from sushi village in irondale… go to bamboo if you want good sushi downtown.

Wow was Jinsei a treat! Friend and I stopped by Saturday night for dinner. We were there late around 8 and it was getting dark, but it felt like a very upscale establishment lol. We splurged on calamari and three sushi roles. The calamari was light and well cooked, though the dipping sauce was a hot chili oil instead of regular sauce for tempura. It was good but if I go again I’d definitely skip on the app and go straight for the rolls because that’s where they shined.

Our server was lovely and had wonderful recommendations. Spicy hote is amazing. Price is low to average for a sushi place. It appears to be a popular place…and definitely worth it.
