Reviews
Jin Sho is a down-to-earth regular Japanese restaurant with sushi, sashimi, and other tapas as well as udon. They are also not terribly overpriced, considering that all other shops charge way more. They are definitely expensive, even more Bay Area standards but again, you are at the heart of California Ave.
The interior is functional. Clean, and spread out. Nothing fancy. Just from those looks, you know you are grabbing a regular meal. The food is quite good. The fish was fresh. The sushi was well made – definitely done by someone who truly cares about nigiris and the right technique than trying to make as many as possible in the shortest period of time. These sushi and sashimi were not the haughty omakase grade with fancy frills, knife cuts, and torched with random sauces. These were down-to-earth honest sushi made with good rice and a hint of wasabi. And sometimes, that is just enough. You just want a hearty meal and that’s what you get.
The udon and other rolls follow the same philosophy. They are not about show and ostentatiousness. They just want to serve Japanese food, closer to an uncle at home making it rather than a restaurant. And it works. It shows.
Jin Sho is a solid addition to California Ave and they desperately needed one. You can’t go omakase each time you have a sushi craving. Sometimes, comfort food is better. And that’s what Jin Sho delivers at a reasonable price.
I arrived without a reservation and was promptly seated and after which we saw a few people seemed like they were turned away for wait time. Other wise it was a good experience.
Freshest Wasabi I’ve had compared to many other “fastfood” places.
Over for four people we averaged at about $50 a person.
This has got to be one of the best sushi restaurants in Northern California. Everything was SO fresh and so flavorful. Each bite transports you into a wild ride, as if you caught the fish and ate it same-day. I didn’t know what I was expecting but I will have to compare all my future sushi eating endeavors to this one from now on.
Uni- the best item on the menu – so creamy, rich, and delicious. My mouth is watering as I type this
Salmon set 5pc- it’s 5 pieces of salmon nigiri. Each piece is so tender and meaty and full of all the salmon flavor that I want
Ikura nigiri – so delicious, the right balance of salt and carbs
Sashimi deluxe- basically an omakase but with fewer types of fish. There were a few uncommon choices like belt fish and this other white fish in addition to yellowtail, sockeye salmon, Toro, bluefin tuna.
Chirashi bowl – added the rice that I needed in this meal and also had uni! As well as several other types of yummy fish
Spider roll – the crab was very crunchy and flavorful. A good addition to the meal
Giants roll – also a good addition to the meal, had potent salmon and eel flavor.
I would come back in a heartbeat. The staff were friendly and service was extremely fast as well.
