Stopped for lunch. Helpful, friendly and quick service. Two of us split the Lechon asado plate, which was roasted pulled pork with rice & beans, plus ordered a side of mofongo, a mashed green plantain dish. Flan for dessert, just creamy yumminess. Our waiter, the owner’s son Anthony, explained all the dishes to us plus the four sauces. There was garlic oil for putting on the delicious mofongo. A “pink sauce” (aka, traditional MayoKetchup) for the pork, and two of the restaurant’s specialty sauces, which you can also purchase by the bottle. One is a hot sauce, pictured. Quite hot but flavorful. The other is a red guava sauce which we used on the rice and beans…and we bought a bottle of that to take home. The owner stopped by our table to ask if all was well and to tell us a bit about his place. I have visited Puerto Rico twice and the food was very comparable to what you would find on that beautiful island….oh so tasty! The have several fun-sounding cocktails on the menu but since it was midday we stuck with a pineapple soda pop from PR. We will be back!

If you haven’t been to Jibaro in Muscatine yet, stop what you’re doing and go. This family-owned Puerto Rican restaurant is exactly the kind of place we need more of—amazing food, warm hospitality, and flavors you won’t find anywhere else around here.

The service is top-notch—it’s family-run, so they make recommendations based on what they personally love, and trust me, they know what they’re talking about. I took their advice and went with the Lechón Asado, and wow. Tender, perfectly seasoned roasted pork that melts in your mouth. Absolutely phenomenal.

I also tried the Jibaro sandwich, which was packed with flavor and a great first introduction to fried plantains (why have I never had these before?!). But the real showstopper? The empanadilla de pollo. Take a bite, add a little of the house hot sauce on the table, and BOOM—pure magic. A total chef’s kiss moment.

If you love great food and supporting local businesses, this is your spot. Let’s make sure they stay, because Muscatine needs more of this! Go try it—you won’t regret it.

My first time eating here and all I can say is “WOW” I’ve been to Puerto Rico multiple times and the flavor at Jibaro is outstanding. It took me right back to being on the island. The staff was kind and helpful to explain anything on the menu or give recommendations. The empanada was sinfully delicious and the guava sauce that comes with them compliments it perfectly. I also got the fried sweet plantains and the lechon asado the pork was tender and juicy, the rice was perfectly seasoned, plantains cooked to perfection. I would defintely recommend trying Jibaro if your on the fence just go for it! You won’t regret it!

Absolutely delicious!

I had the chicken wings with rice and beans, and wow everything was bursting with flavor. The wings were perfectly seasoned with a crispy outside and juicy inside, and the rice and beans were so comforting and authentic. You can really taste the love and tradition in every bite. The portions were generous, and the service was friendly and fast. If you’re craving Puerto Rican comfort food done right, this place is a must.

I can not stress how much you need to go eat here. The minute you step through the door it smells like home cooking. The food outstanding. My only complaint is they are so far away (we drove from LeClaire), I guess that’s for the best because if they were local I’d go daily. Already looking forward to our next visit.

We ordered several apps and entrees.
Alcapurria
Empanadilla de carne
Papas de rellenos (this is the only thing that was not cooked to perfection so to be fair I will mention that.. but it was opening night, they were super busy, I can only assume that they probably ran out of the potato and were trying to make them as quick as possible and didn’t have time to let the potato sit overnight)

Jibaro Sandwich
Lechon Asado (basically pernil)
Pollo Guisado
All phenomenal
Came with your choice of rice – obv got arroz con gandules…(The only crime with no olives! But maybe that’s a regional thing?)
Rice is served in the CUTEST mini Caldero too.

We did also get dessert to go
Budin de pasas which I haven’t had since childhood!
And of course flan. (Vanilla)

The waitress was super kind and as attentive as possible with the heavy volume of people all on opening night. Looking around – all of the wait staff were doing great. Just an all around great experience.

My daughter and I drove an hour to get there for their first day open. We knew and were prepared for the possible slow service and/or long wait. The place was packed! Much bigger than I expected. When the waitress finally came to take our order, my daughter joked about me ordering almost everything in the menu. The food did not disappoint. The flavors took me back to my youth living in PR. We’ll definitely be going back in the near future.

Want to feel like you flew to Puerto Rico? Come and visit Jibaro Restaurant. I had the Chicharron with white rice and beans and felt like my grandma was the one making it. The bacalaito and alcapurria were immaculate. Also, if you’re looking for a drink, the Jibaro sunset was amazing.

Here’s the problem: There are lots of great locally owned restaurants to enjoy in Muscatine.

But this is the thing: There’s only one Puerto Rican restaurant in Iowa, and this is it.

Jibaro impresses. Authentic PR food presented by a personable and professional staff.

Pro tip: get two kinds of plantains and a rum drink.
