This is some of the best Chinese food in Pittsburgh. Since I found this gem I probably stop in at least once a week and it’s always a feast. I love grabbing friends and eating family style.

The staff is so kind. But be aware they are more eastern style in that they don’t wait on you hand and foot like expected in western dining, but you’ll get everything you need.

This was my first time having northeastern style Chinese food. I had the cumin lamb and the pork and cabbage dumplings. The lamb was tender with juicy fat, and dish had tasty spices and heat. The dumplings have a distinct cabbage taste, and you can add chili oil and soy sauce to your preference. The wait staff were attentive and will help you with the menu. I’ll definitely be back

This place, although located in a obscure underground on the Murray District, offers a relatively authentic Chinese food experience. The food comes in a big proportion, and matches the “northeastern China” food experience deep in my memory. However, I would say that the servants could have been more enthusiastic… and I consider it a sin to not have Sesame oil & tomatoes in the miniature dumplings soup (疙瘩汤). Also the waitress forgot our rice until we asked for it. It’s not even during a busy hour!

Of all the Asian restaurants we have tried in squirrel hill, this is my favorite. The food is hearty and really delicious. We got the fried pork cutlet and authentic mushun pork among other things. It was so good that we didn’t have any leftovers despite having ordered quite a lot of food for two people. Will definitely come back for more before we leave Pittsburgh.

Excellent & genuine NE Chinese food. Worth a detour even if only for the 锅包肉 (Guobao Pork). Pork tenderloin slices are cushioned well by starch crust, tender inside and heavenly golden&crispy outside, finished with sweet and sour that is not excessively sugary. For this dish alone, it’s an easy top10 across US and top3 midwest. We also had cumin lamb 孜然羊肉 and stir fry potato shred 炒土豆丝, which are also good.

This is a fantastic chinese restaurant, a tad difficult to find because the restaurant in underground and only has 1 sign.

Inside of the place is small but large mirror and bright colors make it feel larger.

Food wise a great mix of cold and hot. While I did not get the iron pot stew, the table next to us had it and it looked amazing. The corn and wheat buns were good and the table was split 50/50 on which was better. Only complaint about both were they were a tad to oily.

I tried an eggplant dish and the porkchop dish. The eggplant veggie mixture was extremely good. The pork chop was sour and sweet. But not the american style sweet and sour. This was not artificial orange sweet sauce. It was a tad bit more on the sour side and they were drizzled with sauce not soaking in it. Reccomend this for sure.

All in all i give this 4 out of 5. 4 stars for the oily bun and because the wait staff was non existent when we wanted to order and also again when looking to pay.

I didn’t get a chance to eat here when they were the Northeast Kitchen (old menu) but I have been super pleased with Jian’s Kitchen’s menu and service! We ordered a huge meal for Lunar New Year takeout and the food was awesome. There were a couple items we originally ordered that ended up not being available but they called us to let us know and offered suggestions for substitutions– and those were some of our favorite dishes! I really like that they offer some unique traditional options that you can’t find at any of the (many) other Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood. Going to add to our regular rotation for sure!

Food was good – sesame tofu had nice flavor. The rice was a bit dry. I ordered online to pick up. Their ordering platform doesn’t let you pay online, so you have to use cash or card in store. Somehow though a convenience fee from the website is still added. But when I went to the restaurant, I was given a higher total. The receipt had no breakdown, so I couldn’t see if it was an item charged at a higher amount or an additional fee added.

So the food was good enough, but I definitely wouldn’t order online again.
