This is more than a BBQ restaurant—it’s a story of family, legacy, and food made with love. The owner is an incredible baker who handcrafts every dessert, even growing her own herbs and vegetables at home for the dishes served here. The dedication, care, and long hours she invests shine through in every bite.
Her sons are the pitmasters behind the unforgettable brisket, ribs, and fried chicken—smoked to perfection—and their daughter brings warmth and kindness to every table she serves. This family built the restaurant as a living tribute to their beloved son and brother, Jessie, who tragically passed away. Every plate served feels like part of his legacy.
As a family who has also walked the road of child loss, we understand the depth of that love and pain, and we pray blessings and favor upon this family.
The portions are generous (my husband and I share a meal and still take some home), the flavors are rich and soulful, and the service is the kind you remember long after you leave.
If you’re searching for the best barbecue in Montana with authentic flavor, heartfelt service, and a story that will stay with you—Jessie Pepper’s Smoke Shack is it. An absolute Montana treasure and a beautiful tribute to Jessie.

I make a point of traveling the world to eat good food. In all of the places I’ve been in rural, western America, this food is the by far the most surprisingly delicious!
Best potsticker I’ve ever eaten west of the Mississippi (and I’ve eaten them in 5 star restaurants in Denver and LA). The Mac and cheese was hand crafted and perfectly “cheesed”. The meat was tender and smoked perfectly.
For middle of nowhere eating, these cooks are absolutely phenomenal! Keep it up guys.
Love this place- it checks all the boxes ❤
We ordered the brisket wellington, a salad with maple sage dressing, the pork pot stickers. This was my first experience tasting beef wellington, and I’m still trying to process. Smokey tender, fall off the fork beef, a thin layer of decadent truffle mushrooms, under a buttery flaky crust.. I went into a second food coma after writing this. It was top notch and I feel like any future beef wellington I may have outside of Jesse Peppers will only disappoint.
The pot stickers were flavorful and panfried to perfection.
The salad was really fresh and I love the variety of tender lettuce.
We couldn’t decide on dessert so we took home 3! Coconut macaroons, apple rum cake- so so yummy, and our favorite was the raspberry chocolate cake. So delicious!
The only problem I have with this place is trying to decide what to order tomorrow
For dessert, we took home the homemade strawberry chocolate cheesecake. Absolutely delicious! After chatting with a friendly local and our wonderful server, we learned that the owner comes in every morning to bake everything fresh. You can truly taste the difference!
The food, the service, the atmosphere all exceptional. It’s clear this locally owned spot puts so much heart into everything they do. We’ll definitely be back for more!
