When we entered to pay the pump bill we we surprised to enter Jerry’s Hilltop Cafe the real reason this stop along the highway exists. We soon learned it has been there for “a very long time” (40+ years) and it was the magnet for visits from other sates too get a home cooked meal of quality served by a family represented in generations of service. The pleasant smell of savory delights distracted me from the cashiers asking me for my payment. It was then without hesitation that I said, “We will be back for dinner!” as we were just a few miles away from our final destination for the night. It was already dinner time however the place was packed.
Forty minuted layer after putting our camper into our Harvest Host, Pfanny;s Farm”, we were in route back to order access to the buffet. The young lady who seated us asked if we would lie to see a full menu, but looking around at the other guests eating, it was clear the buffet was choice. It was a Wednesday night, the choice was Ribs and died chicken. Obviously the ribs were very popular because the rib sauce was now covering nice juicy pieces of sausage as the ribs had been cleaned out before 6 p.m. On asking about other evening choice we were informed Thursday night was prime rib and much more in demand too.
After we finished eating and wishing we were not required to drive back to our camp, as a full bar was available to supplement your meal, and a good bourbon always is a nice pallet cleanser, we were delighted to meet our cook. The mother of Jerry, “Toots”, who has been the family member “in charge of” who has donated her talent to Jerry’s since the beginning was delighted to talk with us and when she heard we were camping just a few miles down the road invited s back for breakfast and a chat.
The dinner was wonderful, all you could eat with a variety top please. We returned for breakfast about 9 a.m. to find that not every seat was sold out and Toots was there cooking again. The somewhat slower pace of breakfast allowed us to meet all the family and to enjoy conversations about our similarities in places we’ve seen and people who shared life experiences.
Ruth and I highly recommend you drive out of your way to experience Jerry’s Hilltop Cafe. You will be so glad you did
We were going to eat lunch, but upon entering and seeing the condition we decided to continue down the road.
It was very run down and dirty. The one bathroom they had open was absolutely disgusting.
I asked for the end cut done medium.
Salad was simple but excellent. Rolls and Relish were both very good. But the highlight was the prime rib. Very large serving, cooked perfectly, flavorful and tender. I was very happy and highly recommended it.
