THE EXPLORER
We went again for dinner the other day. Four of us. Greeted very nicely at the door and got a nice table inside.
We ordered several appetizers including beat salad, shrimp salad and two mains salmon and steak frittes all were good but the steak was a little tough. Portions were quite large. We brought our own wine and the corkage fee was $35.00.
Service was very nice and there was a lively crowd but a little noisy due to the people at the table next to us.
My wife and went back to have dinner alone this time. We got a nice table in the back. Place was almost full but noise level was lower than on our last visit.
We order a carafe of wine to start with the pate platter. The pate was just ok.
Then we order the hanger steak and salmon. Both were cooked nicely and very delicious. It was a very pleasant evening. Our waiter was very attentive and service was prompt. All A+.

A nice French alternative in the UES, where you can enjoy the classic escargots, a tasty Duck or the Coquille St. Jacques. For dessert we recommend the Tarte Tatin. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Tried the new location. Very nice and cozy. A little hard to hear conversations. Food was outstanding. We tried the Pate, salads, crab cakes. All were very fresh and presentation was outstanding. For mains we tried the duck special and the chicken along with steak. My roasted chicken was moist and crispy just excellent! Service was friendly and fast. Overall a great meal.

Jean Claude Restaurant is a true hidden gem on the Upper East Side — warm, intimate, and effortlessly charming. The ambiance is classic French bistro, with candlelit tables and a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes you feel like a regular from your first visit.

The food is exceptional. The steak frites was tender and perfectly balanced, the escargots rich and flavorful, The scallops with risotto were perfectly seared — buttery and tender — served over a creamy, rich vegetable risotto that was full of depth and balance. The fries were the best fries I’ve ever had! Perfectly salty and crispy. And the crème brûlée absolutely spot on. Every dish feels thoughtfully prepared and deeply authentic.

Service was friendly and attentive, with staff who clearly know and love the menu. For a quiet, delicious escape from the city buzz, Jean Claude delivers on every level. A must-visit for lovers of French cuisine.

I loved my rainy day lunch at Jean Claude Bistro. Great staff and fabulous food! I kept it light with a crab cake appetizer. Delicious and larger than I expected. Thanks Kamel for a great experience.

We awaited the opening of Jean Claude at First and 58, as we love the Second Avenue location and were thrilled to find the menus are identical. The space is lovely and the service excellent.
We started with salad verte and I went with the daily special of calves’ liver with onions and it was a great choice. My husband loves their steak a poivre with crispy French Fries and it’s what he usually orders and it did not disappoint today, but he found the sauce more peppery than usual.
Only negative-a 3% “convenience” fee if you pay with a credit card. I find this irritating.

Bistro Jean Claude – 1st Avenue, NYC

Sipping on a crisp glass of Sancerre instantly transported me back to my travels through France – a delightful start to my visit. The tuna tartare was impeccably balanced and fresh, showcasing high-quality ingredients and a flawless ménage of Asian and French influences. To conclude, a beautifully crafted café au lait and a wondrous sambuca rounded out what was meant to be a simple midday snack but became an experience worth savoring.
