We’re so lucky to have JB Bagelry in the neighborhood—this place is a much needed bagel heaven.
They serve up a variety of freshly made bagels, including fun flavors like Pizza and Cheez-It, plus a lineup of creative shmears (think classics to originals like hot honey sriracha ).
We’re both big fans of lox, so we went for their lox bagel loaded with spicey peppers, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, and arugula—chef’s kiss. Also tried the scallion cream cheese on Asiago and Everything bagels—absolutely delicious.
While there is some seating inside, it’s pretty limited—most people grab their bagels to-go. Perfect for a quick, tasty breakfast or lunch on the run! ️
They’ve added stores since, and have become a chain.
If I had been invited somewhere for a weekend I would always have three dozen sent in advance. They were always appreciated.
After 30 years in New York, where I knew the bagels couldn’t be beat, my Cleveland relatives got together for a party. Adrianne, who was, by my perspective, relatively new to the family (but not to anyone else in attendance) had recalled a time I sent 3 dozen to one of our families‘s elders.
She and I started a discussion about one of my favorite topics, bagels!
I told her that I had done some searching and found bagel retailers in Cleveland, but nothing matched H&H.
Adrianne told me she found a terrific new bagel place on Mayfield Road, JB Bagelry. I have reason to travel up and down Mayfield often. And I kept my eyes open for the establishment. Just my luck, I couldn’t find it.
So I did what any other true bagel lover would do, I sent a text message to Adrianne who gave me the exact address! I put JB Bagelry in my contacts database so I could refer to it next time I was on Mayfield which was that day. I didn’t want time to pass before I found Cleveland’s perfect bagel.
Wouldn’t you know it’s? I must have passed the store 1 million times. You need the address if you’re going to find it. The restaurant keeps itself a secret. It’s a tiny store that doesn’t mark itself with bright colors or blinking signs. It blends into its environment.
That’s OK. I had the address and I pulled into the parking lot, walked over to the door, and went in. It was different than H&H, a sandwich shop, a walk-in without tables.
As a customer, you walk in, stand in line, and tell the young ladies behind the counter what kind of bagel you want and what you want ON it. Or IN it. (I’m never sure about that).
I asked for a sesame bagel with cream cheese. A sesame bagel was taken out of a basket behind the counter, cut in half, and cream cheese was expertly spread in the middle.
The final young lady wrapped it in that special delicatessen-type paper. And she wrapped it like no other professional could do it. Only specially trained artisans in bagel stores know how to wrap such a bagel.
The place smelled so good. I couldn’t wait to get it to my car. I had to unwrap it in the car while driving. I had to. That’s when I learned it’s not easy to consume a sesame bagel with cream cheese while driving. One would need 25 to 50 napkins. And then even you can’t be certain you won’t get some element of this delicacy on you.
And I did.
I had three or four napkins courtesy of the restaurant (like my mom, the people at JB knew I was a slob) and wiped the cream cheese off my pants as well as I could. Fortunately, I was just out running errands and I had been headed back home.
This bagel, and the cream cheese that complemented it, was delicious. I savored it to make it last. When I was finished with the first half I went on to the second, and was disappointed when it was all gone.
That means it was good. Very good. I made a mental note to stop there again. And I did during this weeks killer snowstorm. But wisely, JB Bagelry was closed.
I forgot to mention the interesting encounter I had in JB Bagelry. A commanding woman standing in front of the counter, who may have been the owner or a supervisor, had been watching me from the time I was in front of the store making pictures, to the moment I was in the store, trying to take pictures. She stopped me, asked what I was up to and, stunned by the question, I made something up. She seemed displeased and asked me not to use them. That’s the reason the bagel-preparers pictures faces I posted are blurred out. (Who wouldn’t want publicity for their store?)
That’s a lot to say this tiny store. And it may that this is Cleveland‘s move toward becoming an H&H-quality challenger.
So Freaking Good

The Bagel’s & Spreads are DELICIOUS
The bagel’s have a nice chew, not crusty and stay fresh for several days!
Loved that I could try the spreads before I purchased them.
The BLT on a rosemary salt bagel is excellent- the ratio of cream cheese to bagel to sandwich ingredients is perfect! You can eat it without making a huge mess or getting too much of one flavor in a bite. Everything tasted fresh. The manager was really friendly and gave us a sample of their house-made cream cheese. I’m not sure if I’ll get the sandwiches too often just because they’re a little pricey, but I will definitely be back more often to try the other bagel and cream cheese flavors.
