I finally made the trip out to Elgin to check this place out, and let me tell you it was worth it and then some! Dan’s record collection and rich knowledge of jazz music and history is spectacular and worth the trip alone. Not only that, but the coffee selection and freshness is great too. These folks have great taste all around. I can assure you you won’t find this combination of great music, great coffee, and friendly people anywhere else. Not in Rochester, not in Minneapolis, not even in Chicago. This place is a unique gem. I highly recommend making the trip here even if it is a long drive for you, and I very rarely review anything, so this is high praise. Bravo!

Ok…I’m from NYC and have been in a lot of cool places over the years, but this place beats them all hands down. That’s the truth. The Jazz Shepherd cafe does not try to be anything but itself and that’s why it works! Dan is such a great host and welcomes everyone into this amazing jazz space. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, and the menu is varied and interesting.

I discovered this place on accident – while passing through town, enroute to another town, I went in search of a quick cup of coffee. This place is like no other.
Thousands of records, from each and every denomination of jazz, funk, soul, and more – line the walls. Its a place that feels out of time, able to remove you from wherever you were. It feels like a warm book, like being wrapped up in a warm blanket. Great coffee, wonderful music, and an incredibly welcoming and friendly staff. I ended up talking with the owner, Dan, for a long time and he was as friendly and as accommodating as anyone could possibly be.
I’m happy I stumbled across this place. Its a hidden gem, and I definitely can’t wait to go back.
Oh, and as a result, I ended up being late to where I was going – And I’m totally ok with it.

I have been wanting to visit this cafe for so long and it’s surpassed my expectations! The overall vibe was very comforting and relaxing. Not to mention the drinks! I had an iced mocha and it was the right amount of sweetness! Absolutely recommend if you need to wind down, with a drink in hand, and listen to some tunes on your day off!

Dan is an amazing owner! The breakfast sliders were amazing, the breakfast burritos were great, and the coffee’s were perfect!
I really would expect to find a place like this in KC, Chicago or New Orleans with the atmosphere and decor.
This was definitely worth going off the beaten path for, and I will be specifically including a stop here on any trips to the UP in the future.

Amazing hidden gem in Elgin! We’re from Rochester and had to make it up here. Great coffee. Amazing atmosphere. Food looked great too! Dan is warm and welcoming! Amazing collection of vinyl to check out too! Can’t wait to return for trivia night or a jazz show!
