I wanted shrimp and grits but they stopped making it at 2pm. I got the large brisket and shrimp po boy. Both were good. I thought the there would be more brisket and I bought 2 12oz cans of soda that were $2 each which is a bit high. Also they ran out of some items. The brisket was very good. My daughter said it was the best she ever had. Super tender. All the good was good and I got to meet the owner. Someone ordered macaroni and cheese about the owner said that he had been throwing it away because enough people had not been coming to get it. We need to support this guy because his food is good. I’d recommend going out there to Alpine and I am certainly going to go out again. I was pretty surprised to find a soul food spot in Alpine. He will definitely have my support.

Tried some of my friends Mac & Cheese and Yams and they were amazing! Also my ribs were delicious. Food came out hot and in a timely manner. The staff Vi was very accomodating and friendly! Great job to Josefina and Ashley the cooks on the delicious food! Would definitely come back!

In my opinion the food, service and atmosphere was not worth our 35 minute drive nor our $80. The brisket was undercooked. The greens and macaroni and cheese had zero flavor. What took me out was the .50 I was charge for hot sauce and the known couple beside us was not charged when asked. Charging for hot sauce is a no go to begin with but to pick and choose who you charge is outrageous. Never again for us! Don’t waste your time or money.

This place is a hidden gem, when I tell you that you will not be disappointed. One of the best BBQ places in San Diego county. I say county because it’s in Alpine. Yes I said Alpine, and well worth the drive. Jay the owner was helping us with our order let’s hope he finds someone who can help when he needs it and they continue his wonderful service. I will definitely be coming back.

I chose this place because we were starved after visiting a nearby animal attraction with kids and I have no experience with Southern food. My partner has some authentic experience from travels. We all loved the food here – kids and grown ups. We had the brisket with sides, brisket with grits, and the pulled pork sandwich. All were delicious! We have all agreed we will eat here anytime we visit the area to eat delicious food and support a local family business.

I went to Jay’s with my mom for dinner today, and it was just okay. The brisket had the potential to be good, but about half of the 12oz portion was straight fat. Neither of us enjoy fatty brisket, so that was disappointing l, especially given the price. The plate came with two small sides (coleslaw and potato salad), both 6oz, and they were pretty mediocre as well.

We really wanted to like it since BBQ is one of our favorites, but this just missed the mark. They do offer a small military discount, which we appreciated, but with the overall pricing it still didn’t feel worth $30.

That said, the young man at the front desk provided excellent customer service, which was definitely the highlight of the visit.

Great barbecue in Alpine. Get there early because when they run out, they close. The barbecue ribs, pork, and the brisket are top-notch. The sauce is KC style with a southern kick. The sides are stellar. Jay is doing front and back of the house assisted by the family. You won’t be disappointed at Jay’s Southern Cafe.

Blew me away!!!! The mac n cheese is life changing. Don’t sleep on this spot! When we pulled up the aroma smelled so delicious. Service and food 10/10! Worth the drive. Thanks Vi and crew for one of the best bbq meals I’ve ever had. Will see you again soon!!

Jay’s is a family owned business, where great care is taken to craft delicious, high quality Louisiana-style southern barbeque. The staff are down to earth and friendly. The eating area is relaxed and has a hole-in-the-wall feel and is kept clean. The food. Oh man. Everything here is delicious. We got a good selection of the food, and nothing was disappointing. Smoked to perfection and accompanied by homemade BBQ sauce and great sides, we all left wanting more, but incapable of eating more.

Great family-owned restaurant for some legit, hardwood smoked BBQ! Friendly staff, clean & welcoming. Definitely recommend if you like BBQ! Service is a bit slow, but good food takes time. Some gluten free options too, which we appreciated.
