FAIRLY GOOD FOOD
Stopped by here after a water polo game to have supper with my daughter.
The karaage salad was good, but the chicken is garden variety popcorn chicken. It does not taste like it’s been marinated in soy sake and does not have the proper karaage fry.
The agedashi tofu was perfect!

The food was delicious! If you miss going to a Japanese restaurant, try Japanese Express. Their food is restaurant quality and tastes like it! We had the Tori (chicken) Karaage, chicken katsu-don, tempura-don, and miso soup. Both my partner and I want to go back to try more dishes!

I have had several items from here that were amazing- spicy edamame and tempura mushrooms. However, last visit I ordered the garlic fried rice, based on the yummy menu picture. When I got it, it was smothered in a thick layer of bonito flakes. There are no bonito flakes in the description or photo. I am a vegetarian, so I couldn’t eat it. I will certainly order from them again as their food is so good, but I will ask for no bonito flakes!

Just got the agedashi and oyakodon, and they were delicious. Tokyo style dishes, and he’s got traditional Japanese food you don’t normally see at other restaurants and hasn’t “Americanized” it. Definitely recommend going here if you like Japanese food or want to try some more authentic stuff!

Agedashi, okonomiyaki, karrage and takoyaki aren’t items you can find at your garden variety Portland-Japanese restaurant, but Japanese Express does them all, and so many other amazing, authentic Japanese dishes, extremely well! Top-quality Japanese cuisine is slim-to-none on the east side, which makes Japanese Express a welcome addition to the awesome Troutdale Village Food Carts! Can’t wait to go back!
