James on Main creates a new american dinner experience with a farm to table approach. Local ingredients, an open kitchen and a wood fired grill, along with a most welcoming staff, will surely create a memorable experience for your special event or just an evening out.

This is easily one of our favorite places to dine. Every visit feels like something special. The food is consistently outstanding, beautifully prepared, full of flavor, and clearly made with care. Every dish we tried was memorable, and you can tell they take real pride in what they serve.
The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between lively and comfortable. It feels warm, welcoming, and effortlessly stylish, making it just as great for a relaxed night out as it is for celebrating something meaningful.
What really makes the experience stand out is the service. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly without ever feeling overbearing. They make you feel appreciated and well taken care of from start to finish.
Amazing meal, great vibe, and exceptional service every time. We always leave looking forward to our next visit.

I would love to say this is a hidden gem, but at this point so many know and love James On Main that it is far from hidden. Incredible experience from start to finish. The food is excellent (that’s an understatement)—every dish is thoughtfully prepared. I ordered the “not typical” for me and was so happy I did. The staff made the night special: friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a great meal. I love that it’s great food, but you can still dress comfortably. It will easily become our go to for that reason.
This restaurant is a true gem in our town, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’m just disappointed in myself that it took us so long to go.

My husband brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I don’t like prefix menus but the options were diverse enough that it did not feel like I was being forced to eat something I didn’t want. The wait staff were kind, educated, and I loved that they ask about allergies or dietary limits at the table because I am allergic to eggplant. The food was out of this world delicious. I have never had food that made me fall in love until now. The different flavors combined with one another is like fireworks in your mouth. My husband and I discussed the different flavors of our meals and of course shared. We also loved the open kitchen atmosphere and how the chef’s/su chef’s interacted together without yelling and helping one another out. Chef Kelly I believe her name was is the pastry chef and her cheesecake is the most decadent thing I have ever had. Not too sweet, it is perfection. We cannot wait to go back when their menu switches over! Thank you for a fantastic evening, it’s one I will always rave about!!

My parents have lived in Hackettstown for 20+ years now and in the past few years James on Main has become our GO-TO spot when we all visit. The warm interior, large windows, cute bar and open kitchen makes for a cozy, yet vibrant atmosphere. The menu is STELLAR and changes based on what’s in season. There are always some adventurous options along with some “comfort” staples. We always do the 3-Course Dinner. Food is prepared and presented beautifully. The staff all seems legitimately psyched to work there and walk you through the menu – which makes for an even better vibe. While they have a wine list of some local bottles, they’re also BYOB which we always take advantage of. Perfect for birthdays, holiday-eves, anniversaries, etc – they even created a customized menu calling out my Mom’s Bday! I could go on for days but realize most of you already stopped reading – run don’t walk to James on Main – and definitely make reservations.

Overall it’s ok.
They force everyone at the table to do the same menu choice (so either all do 2 course or all do 3 course). Not a fan of that concept.
The prices also felt a little high.
The food was good but not great.
The bad: The lamb bolognese was super oily. I definitely do not recommend that meal. The chocolate biscotti dessert was also not good.
The good: The octopus, pea gazpacho, scallops, hog, prawns and bread were all good.
Lastly, not sure why but some of the tap water/cups smelled like wet dog. I’m guessing they are using old rags when cleaning the cups.

Food is always excellent. Usually go once or twice a year and never disappoints. Tasting menu are good size portions. Consistency can be hard to find but James on Main always on point. Staff always attentive and friendly. Will need to try their take out next.

Beautiful restaurant and delicious everything. Prix fix 2 or 3 course. Very attentive servers. Only disappointment was no lactose free option for coffee or dessert other than an offer of fruit.

This is one of my favorite local restaurants! It is a hidden gem. The menu has excellent variety and everything I ordered was cooked perfectly. In the small setting you can see the chefs cooking and feeding the wood fire grill which I found interesting. If I had one request- I wish that cocktails were offered as well! They have a wine list but no other alcohol options currently. I was still pleased and plan to return.
