Go and give it a try.
8/4/22 they are still in their opening phase offering only a reduced menu, at least for lunch. The friendly waitress did not lose a step when I mentioned that I am a vegetarian but offered a rice, bean and cabbage plate. I paired the recommendation with a Jamaican ginger ale and asked for a hot sauce.
The rice & beans as well as the cabbage & carrots were cleanly cooked and gently seasoned. The satisfying meal came in at a modest $6 but I am happy to pay more for vegetarian options with bolder flavors and more interesting ingredients. We’ll see if they get a 5 star at my next visit.

Our server Daniel put up with all of our million questions as well as putting him on the spot to make the menu decision for us. He was so patient with our group. Service made eating here the best choice.

Best meat patties hands down. I even warmed up 2 patties a day later. Soooo Good.
The goat was so tender with rice and cabbage it was the star at our table. We also ordered the lemon pepper wings with their sweet chili sauce. Next time I want to order sweet chili wings, that sauce was everything; I even used it on my chicken meat patty. My least favorite dish was the jollof rice with fried chicken wings nothing was seasoned. We also liked the plantains. The fufu was fresh and warm. I also ordered the Suyan Beef Kabobs to go with mac and cheese for my son. The veggies and beef made the car smell amazing OTW home. It was also tasty.

One of the owners made a round of Jello shots that were serious. All of our drinks were well made we ordered both sunrises, liquid marijuanas and a passion fruit.

Went to Jambo Grill as I wanted some beef pies, plantains, and jollof rice. The plantains were good, some of the best I’ve had in Alabama. The jollof rice was pretty good as well. I just feel like a little more spices could have been used on the rice. I never tried the beef pies as it was left off my order. The only hiccup I had came from placing my order. First an item being left off my order, second being told the jollof rice came with fried chicken to have it first come out with no chicken then what I believe was broiled chicken and the waiter not taking initiative to correct the problem or apologize. I had to request to add the meat and to speak with someone to get what I paid for. After speaking with the cook who I believe was the owner, he informed me about the type of chicken that came with the jollof rice and provided me with fried as well since I was told that was what I would get and why I ordered it. While I did enjoy the food, I believe a lot of issues may come from not knowing the menu when customers have questions or providing the wrong info. I did want to extend grace as the waiter taking orders seemed young and like hosting was new to her. Nonetheless, the other (adults) working seemed to be very accommodating and also gave me a Jamaican soda because of my long wait. I believe everything will get better with time. I will visit again and plan to bring friends.

Update: I have visited again multiple times since my first visit Oct. 2022 (above) and I have had good experiences. I typically stick with the rice and plantains. Since my first visit, the spices have gotten better.

Jambo Cafe is some of the most authentic food I’ve had in Birmingham. Jamaican Kenyan influenced dishes such as Egusi & fufu and Jollof & chicken were so flavorful and made with great care. You simply have to try this hidden gem!

Located within a strip mall on Montgomery Highway near Hobby Lobby. The restaurant opened at 1pm. This restaurant is relatively new to this area. The table service was a bit slow but based on the different types of cuisine, it is expected. The dishes vary between African, Indian, and Jamaican spices. It’s well worth it if you are patient. We tried Egusi w/ goat & Fufu, jollof rice w/ lamb chops, jerk chicken w/ Jollof & plantains, and chicken curry. The Jollof was okay, as we prefer a little more heat. The winner was the egusi w/leaf and chicken curry. It’s worth a try, especially if you are craving those spices and flavors.

Food was delicious. One of our kababs was cold in the center, but all the other dishes were yummy. We had a party of 5 and it took a little while for us all to get our food. They brought it out as it was finished. But we snacked on each other’s too. So it all worked out.

I usually give new restaurants a few weeks to work out the kinks when they first open. But I heard such good things about Jambo that I broke my own rule and went for lunch at the end of their first week. Man, am I glad I went! The wait staff was friendly and super helpful answering questions about the food options. Our water glass was never empty. And the samosas and jerk chicken, served with rice and cabbage, were delicious. I can’t wait until they have their full menu available so I can try something new! I have already told many friends that this is a must-try!

Man this place is good so far!! I tried the oxtail stew, Jollof rice, and plantains. It was amazing!! The rice needed a lil bit more seasoning like salt and it had a spicy kick but I liked it! The best I’ve had and it’s AUTHENTIC! I recommend for sure.(excuse the pic I put half on a plate, because it’s a big portion)
