We had paneer and aloo paratha, onion pakora, sev puri, and Schezwan rice with Manchurian at Jalsa Restaurant in Maryland. The paneer and aloo parathas were tasty and well made. The onion pakora had good flavor, though it wasn’t very crispy. The sev puri was enjoyable but a little on the sweeter side for our taste. The Schezwan rice went really well with the Manchurian, and the Manchurian tasted very good. Overall, it was a nice experience with flavorful food, and we’d be happy to visit again.

Jalsa Indian Cuisine is an amazing spot, especially for vegetarian food lovers. I tried their samosa chaat, and it was absolutely delicious! The service was excellent, with staff who were very friendly and kind. The restaurant has a cozy and warm atmosphere, even though it’s located inside a gas station, which makes it feel surprisingly welcoming. Overall, it’s one of the best places for vegetarian Indian cuisine I’ve visited, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for flavorful food and great service.

Tried this restaurant for the first time and had a very disappointing experience. I ordered Veg Manchurian Fried Rice, but the Manchurian balls were undercooked and sticky on the inside. I informed the staff, and they prepared it again, but the problem remained the same. The Manchurian was over-fried on the outside—very dark in color—yet still raw inside. While the kitchen and hygiene seemed good, the food quality was not up to the mark. Overall, it was not worth the money.

We had food here on Christmas day and it was a definite surprise. It is within a gas station so we had low expectations and wanted to order only a couple of dishes to try but landed ordering 7 dishes for 3 people. All of them were delicious. We had dosa, vada, masala khichadi and chai. The taste was like home made food and made fresh to order. If you love Gujarati food then this place is a must visit.

If, like me, you have been rueing the lack of a traditional Gujarati restaurant in the Baltimore area all these years, rue no more! Jalsa is a terrific vegetarian restaurant serving authentic, home style Gujarati dishes which are full of flavor. Order the tindora bataka or the poori shaak and you will be transported to Surat or Ahmedabad. The undhiu and thepla combination brought back memories of famous Bombay eateries like Chetana and Rajdhani. And who would pass up a chance to eat poori srikhand cooked in a Gujarati kitchen?
But if you’re in a mood for some Indo Chinese or traditional Punjabi (or even South Indian) dishes, they serve those too. And the snacks are yummy. Dhokla, Dabeli, all manner of chaat dishes – my favorite being the genuine Bombay-style Ragda Patties – and a variety of rice dishes and roti’s.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t admit to enjoying the basundi and rabbadi for dessert! And icing on the cake – quite literally – is a Vadilal cooler tempting you with your favorite Vadilal ice creams.
There’s plenty of parking, and if your car is hungry, you can fill her up too at the Carroll gas station which houses the restaurant!
Best of all, the owners and staff are all extremely friendly and they make you feel right at home.

If you’re unfamiliar, Gujarat is a state in India with a unique language and cuisine. Jalsa specializes in Gujarati comfort foods and street food standards (without the Dehli-belly). Their Indo-chinese is very good too, especially their Gobi Manchurian with “gravy” and their Hakka noodles. If you’re not familiar with Gujarati cuisine vs the far more familiar North Indian fare at most Indian restaurants, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the different flavors and styles of food. Give it a try!
