This place was a definite disappointment although I’m always willing to give a restaurant the benefit of the doubt. We asked for 2 “small” bbq sandwiches, fries & a large drink. The drink definitely was NOT a large. By South Georgia standards, a medium would best describe it. The sandwiches were humongous & very sloppy, but it is bbq, right? They definitely were not not smalls at all. One would think that’s okay IF the food was really good, but it was less than just good. Firstly, the meat was okay if you like fat, gristle and other elements in your bbq, of which I absolutely do not! The fries were pretty good since I do like my fries a mix between crispy and soft. Their bbq sauce was obviously an in-house make which was tasty, but not everyone likes a mustard base which is all you get. (I don’t care for a mustard base, but this was good). The total price was about $22 which I thought for a little small town and just “okay” bbq was excessive, but they did give us 2 large sandwiches instead. Lastly, their post on Google maps said they were open for all business but the dine in was closed & drive thru was the only option

From Florida and stay in Folkston often for train watching. Decided to finally check Jalen’s out as I needed a bbq fix.
Do not let the shabby exterior fool you. This is great bbq!
Believe me when I say I know bbq, I know good bbq.
We were there at 3:00 which is early and ordered take-out. The dining room was closed and would open at 4:00.
I asked owners son, who took our take-out order when the ribs were smoked. He said his dad cooked them this morning. Good answer so I expected the ribs to be good and that they were!
Meaty, smoke ring and juicy, just how ribs should be.
Also order the chicken which was equally good however I should have asked, my fault, for white meat but was nonetheless very juicy and good.
We also ordered the “Today’s Special” of chicken and dumplings. Good but don’t expect super dumplings from a bbq restaurant.
Beans were good, spices and cinnamon complimented well.
If I could critique I would recommend that the bread be toasted with garlic butter.
From everything including drinks-$33. Not bad.
I’ll give the food and service a 5*.
Really could not rate the dining room as it wasn’t open.

Do not pass Jalen’s up because of the exterior. If Jalen would fix up a little, better signage, add a better outdoor sitting area, I’m sure anyone passing through Folkston will not be disappointed.
Perfect for my next trip to Folkston for watching trains.

I love their barbecue. I live in Virginia, but every time I go home to Georgia, I make sure I get some Jalen’s barbecue. I especially love the pulled pork with extra sauce.

Jalen’s BBQ is good, but he just pulled a fast one on my to go order. I ordered a half chicken dinner, so I expected to get …half a chicken …breast, wing, thigh, leg…but I discovered all dark meat when I got home. I prefer white meat, but a real half chicken is fine. Anyway, I’ll have to remember to say “half chicken…breast, wing, thigh, leg” next time… not a big deal, I’ll eat it, but surprised when I opened the box. Jalen’s is good and this is really my only complaint after getting food there for years…

Jalen’s is so good we drive from Bryceville, Florida to get it! Ribs are always good! Their smoked chicken salad is the best we’ve ever had, we had to get some to go. The only bbq place worth going to in Folkston.

I hate BBQ. To the point where my family jokes about it.
That being said. I was taking a trip to purchase something out of Hilliard Florida and had to stop to buy windshield wipers at O’Reilly’s. When I got out of the car the smell was so good that I had to ask the people inside what it was. They told me it was the restaurant across the street called Jalen’s BBQ. I conferred with my friend and we decided to eat lunch there.
The people from O’Reilly’s suggested the loaded fries, I was in more of a mood for a sandwich, so I got the sandwich, collard greens and potato salad. My friend got the sandwich and the half order of loaded fries. The food was absolutely amazing. The only disappointing thing about the visit was the fact that they do not sell their mustard-based sauce. It is not yet bottled for sale, that is a problem they are remedying at the moment.
The portions were huge. The only thing I would have liked some more of was the potato salad but then I wouldn’t have been able to finish everything else.

I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, fries, collard greens, and sweet tea. Not only was Jordan at the window super friendly and nice, the food was awesome, and the portions were huge, I had plenty left over for a second helping later!

I haven’t really been to the establishment every time I got food from them it was through DoorDash, but I would always get the loaded fries with pork And I will get the double cheeseburger. I wanna try the chicken salad sandwich one day and I will but with what I had so far, everything was pretty decent actually it was pretty good. I liked it. I love that lot of fries small or the big one I think they’re pork on that is a little too sweet, but it’s really good. I appreciate them for their taste and food.

We are in Folkston doing the train watching thing and found this place by asking around. MAN OH MAN are we happy we found it!
Serving sizes are HUGE, and prices are totally reasonable given the amount of food! Not one of us was able to finish our meal! More for us to have later!!
The pulled pork was absolutely melt in your mouth delicious, and the sauce was to die for! I had mine without a bunch due to a gluten allergy, but my husband had a sandwich that was so large, he could barely hold it.
If we are ever in the area again, you better believe we would eat here again!
