If you like Carolina style BBQ this is a traditional pork place. The only thing barbecue I found on their menu was just some pulled pork and it tastes just like do you expect Carolina Barbecue. The flavors are kind of basic met for an older crowd. The chicken was good nothing unexpected and not out of this world. But I have the coleslaw on the side instead of on top of my pulled pork. It was The Best Coleslaw I’ve had in this state so far. It’s not a traditional mayonnaise base not spicy just a whole different flavor worth trying. The three waitresses were very kind and interesting people. And the prices were Fair. It’s definitely worth a trip if you’re in town.

Very solid Eastwern NC style shreded pork. An odd yellow slaw, was ok… but odd. Building was clean and neat. Service was good, it was a little slow when I went in. Food was prepared very quickly. Super good Brunswick Stew.

Jackson’s Big Oak is conveniently located on South Kerr Avenue one block away from South College Road. I was in town for a conference at the Convention Center and drove the five minutes to eat supper here, where they have a walk up to go window outside and a dining area inside. When I arrived at 7:30 pm the place was packed with only one empty booth so I decided to get a barbecue plate with baked beans and french fries to take back to the hotel to eat. The young ladies at the counter were both cheerful, courteous, and friendly while I placed my to go order and I was out the door in less than five minutes with my food. Everything was good and will definitely eat BBQ her again the next time I am in Wilmington.

Lived here my whole life never knew this place was here till today! As someone in the restaurant world i can be super picky way above most but wanted to try it. They were out of the two things i really wanted to try but it happens and we just had a bad snow storm so picked other things flounder and shrimp wasn’t my favorite but boy those yams!!! I would just go back for them and the chicken and dumplings so so good our server was sweet and laid back. They could use some cleaning like salt and pepper shakers and napkins holders i just see that stuff but would go back

I wanted to order some bottles of sauce. After about 3 or 4 attempts I gave up. Its very hard to find the vinegar base sauce i like and i knew they were close to what i liked. After finally takong my information for shipment and a price. I never heard back. If it was an inconvenience they could just say a minimal shipment and i would have paid for more sauce. After reading other reviews, it seems the sauce and everything has changed recently. So i may have dodged one here

I literally I’ve never left a review for any type of business on here, but I felt compelled to let people know our experience today. I ordered a catfish flounder combo. It came with three weird long sticks which I think are called corn sticks that had absolutely zero flavor. Was supposed to come with hush puppies but did not. The catfish was way undercooked and the flounder had a nice crispy breading but it was so greasy that my lips are still oily 3 hours later. I asked the waitress to bring me some tartar sauce but she never did so I used some of the bottled Texas Pete that was on the table. When I took a bite, it was evident that the hot sauce had gone rancid. My husband ordered shrimp and barbecue. The barbecue is not hot but he did say it had a good flavor. His fries were terrible… Almost like raw potato and the fried shrimp with way overcooked to the point that it was so crispy it was hollow inside the breading. This was the worst Food experience that I can ever remember having in a restaurant. Would not recommend and I will not be going back.

A decent variety on the menu. Our food was good. Only exception was when they brought the food out, the cole slaw that I ordered was yellow. Comes to find out that they have a mustard -based coleslaw which I had never seen before and I really did not care for it because it was too sour
for me. There is a huge beautiful oak tree at the back of the parking lot that is over 450 years old. That age of the tree was verified by a local University about 15-20 years ago.

I tried Jackson’s Big Oak the other day. I was disappointed in the food. There was no smoke at Big Oak. I got the bbq, ribs and fish. The bbq and ribs had zero smoke flavor. The ribs tasted and looked like they were boiled with sauce on them. It didn’t taste bad but if you like bbq I would not recommend this place.

I have read a lot of the good reviews and heard people say Jackson’s is the best BBQ in Wilmington. I am from NC and have gone all over the state trying BBQ. The BBQ comp across the state is ridiculous so the standard is set really high. So here is the deal in my opinion based on what I had today.
Jackson’s is one of only 3 restaurants that serve “eastern style” BBQ in Wilmington that I know of other than the franchise that starts with a S and the other place has a buffet.
With that said I think Jackson’s comes in 3rd place out of those 3 when just talking about the BBQ. There is no taste of the BBQ having been cooked on a smoker which is not a deal breaker because there are many I like that are not but it is what I prefer. The slaw today was so over powering of mustard it was hard to eat. I like that style slaw with eastern NC BBQ but this was too strong. My green beans had a very salty taste. My dad said his Okra was cooked perfect and my mom said her baked beans were very good so some positive there. The restaurant was clean and the staff were all very nice but today at-least it was not that good. I will go back and try it again because they have other stuff I want to try plus give the slaw and BBQ another shot but for now it is what it is. I see a possibility of why people give it good reviews in that there really is nothing else like it in Wilmington. Its not a buffet and it is not corp. It has all the staples of an Eastern NC BBQ restaurant but today was not their day. It is worth trying. I saw when leaving they have an early bird special from 3-5. That would be a great time to go try it. I will update this review after my next visit.
