The wife said to me that we had to do “the experience of a true basque place.” Totally glad she said that and planned this place. Awesome experience. First of all, Carrie was our server, and we couldn’t have gotten better service. Thank you, Carrie, for elevating the awesome food and historical place we were in. I DID feel like an outsider lol, as everyone who sat at tables, served, passed through seemed to know each other, and gave each other hugs and asked about their family. It is definitely a local hub that us tourists should be glad we can experience. First of all, I am never going to argue with $5 Lagunitas. Great value. We both also tried the state drink, the Picon, and it was interestingly good and unique. Check that off our Nevada trip list. We did the family-style dinner for food. You aren’t going to love everything when there are this amount of things, but we came close. Soup, Salad, Stew, Beans, French Fries, Bottle of Red Wine, Coffee, and Ice Cream. Wine was solid, extremely solid for coming with the meal. Salad was great. The vegetable bean soup wasn’t my style, and the I am not an expert on beef stew nor beans, but my wife likes all three and said they were awesome. I was waiting for the other elements. The fries were amazing. I didn’t want to break any rules and ask for dipping sauce, but the fries didn’t need them. Delicious on their own. The steak, which I believe they say is from cattle down the street, tasted like so. Sorry, cattle down the street. I LOVED it. The fact that this steak was just PART of a huge meal and could be an entree at an expensive steak place is the best compliment I can give. Amazing. By the end of that, I was expecting pedestrian ice cream. NO. NOOO. The ice cream was awesome. We had the maple nut and strawberry cheesecake. The place feels like history, the bar area is SO cool (although you can’t do family style at the bar understandably), and everything about this place is incredible. If in the area, MAKE TIME. I highly recommend this place, and see you there (the next time we are in the area)…

I did not catch our server’s name but she was wonderful and very polite and really the only positive thing I can say about our experience. I almost feel bad for her working in an establishment like this.
I have heard so many good things about this restaurant over the years and just got around to trying it as I had to drive all the way from the north side of Spanish springs (60 miles and over an hour drive) to have one of the most disappointing experiences ever.
From the moment my partner and I walked in we felt uncomfortable. Like I said at least our server was nice.
Onto the food. The bread was cold, and butter also cold and hard. Our soup was decent but very bland, kind of felt like sipping like warm chicken broth with vegetables and small chunks of pasta.
There were no other vegetables in the salad, it was literally wilted lettuce and dressing.
The beef tongue stew was decent, but has 2 chunks of potato in it. Personally not a fan of the texture but can’t hold that against the restaurant.
The entree was downright bad. I had 1/4 potato chunks in my mashed potatoes that mind you were undercooked but yet hot enough to burn my mouth on. The meatloaf was burnt on top but served cold to the touch and kind of felt like eating sand it was so dry.
My partner ordered a steak medium and it came out blue. The picture attached is after it got sent back for being undercooked, it came out less than 2 minutes later clearly still only cooked on one side and still borderline blue, but arguably the cold side of rare.
I have never had such a disappointing experience at a restaurant to ask for my check and leave after eating barely a third of my entree.
But by far the most disappointing part of this is that we were sitting watching multiple other tables get better looking food.

Great Lil gem in Gardnerville. We will be back again. Our server Wren was so nice and took good care of us! Steak sandwich was big and tasty. Came with salad and fries. Yummy

Fantastic experience, historic building with photos lining the walls offers a great atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly, and the steak sandwich was so tender there was no need to use the knife. Incredibly concise menu and simple dishes, with excellent portion sizes for the price.

WILL RETURN! What a great find on our way home from Southern California on 395. We were immediately greeted by Etienne, probably with most efficient bartender ever experienced. We found him so enjoyable and he makes an amazing hot buttered rum.
We chose to eat our lunch at the bar, it was absolutely fantastic. We had the steak sandwich, cod fish special, chicken rice soup, and the sweet breads. Everything was prepared to perfection, we sopped up every last drop with delicious fresh baked bread.
We appreciate that they are family owned and source locally including raising their own beef. It was such an enjoyable experience we are already planning a trip for dinner and spending the night so we can thoroughly enjoy ourselves, thank you again Etienne for such a memorable time!

One of those rare finds that are just a gem of an establishment.. Definitely stop in for as authentic as it gets traditional Basque cuisine. Historic old west building and saloon serving up heaping portions of delicious food and outstanding Basque cocktails. Don’t leave without a Picon punch – one is not enough and three is too many. One of my favorite places in the Carson Valley.

This place is an experience, a dining destination. Basque style food. A light onion, cabbage and carrot soup was served first with delicious bread, perfect for sopping. Then a hefty salad with a light dressing, hot, skinny French fries and beans served family style, you pick your entree. I had the Pacific Cod, Husband and my friend had the sirloin, another had the lamb. Everything was delicious. We did not have the Picon drinks but tasted. Whoa! A lovely family owned establishment for years, it is clean, cozy yet spacious. My friend grew up with the owner who greeted us warmly. The ice cream for dessert was the creamiest. Much of food is locally sourced. Take a try at the end of your meal to place a dollar on the ceiling. I couldn’t do it so Etienne did it from the toe of his shoe! I didn’t get pictures of the food, we were too busy eating. But we did get a few pix!

We stopped here on a road trip from Reno and we are so glad we did!! It was lunch so we didn’t do the full Basque experience but everything we tried was delicious, especially the steak sandwich, a dish I highly recommend. I also had hot tea, served in a proper teacup. The servers were friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back.
