I came in right after an event and while they were still wrapping things up, they were extremely friendly and welcoming. However, the thing about J Rocks was the food. I had the catfish poboy and it is by far one of the best that I have ever had. The fish was thick and crunchy and the sandwich had what tasted like picked red onions and pickles on it. The bread was soft and the okra was cooked to perfection. Anytime, I come to or thru Topeka this is going to be a go to place for me!

Great bbq spot! The food was delicious, the portions were generous , the set menu offered great value, and the staff were friendly. my only disappointment was that the barbeque sauce tasted a bit too similar to ketchup.

Catfish dinner, fried okra (mmmmm), beans (haven’t tried them yet). Fish was very good, good breading, cooked right. No complaints. Also bought a slab of ribs. Tender, fall off the bone, sauce is good and the ribs are dry, the way I like, let me decide, sauce, how much, so, good there. Staff was pleasant. They even had RC Cola in the fridge. I haven’t had an RC since I was kid, pleasant surprise. I’ll definitely be going back in the future.

J Rocks smoke house offers a laid-back, casual barbecue experience with live music and hearty portions. I stopped in for dinner and ordered the rib tips with okra and fries. The food was solid—rib tips were flavorful and tender with a nice smoky char, and the sides were hot and satisfying. The okra was especially good—crispy and well-seasoned.

Live music was a fun touch. The atmosphere overall was decent; that worked well for a relaxed BBQ joint. It’s the kind of place where you come for a filling meal and a chill night out.

If you’re in the Topeka area and craving BBQ with a bit of entertainment, J Rocks is worth checking out. Solid food, generous portions, and a local vibe make it a good spot for a casual dinner.

It was a lovely place to share a family meal with my girl. It’s the back woods family restaurateurs feel I look for with soul food at its top game. It just drips from the bones, it’s so good. We did a tour of building, I love to show off J Rocks Smokehouse LLC. The facilities were very clean

Unsatisfied Customer
Sorry so long, But as much as I was disappointed with everything, I really hope that this family can use criticisms as motivation to better the restaurant, or I very much could see this place closing soon.

What I ordered, fried catfish w/ mac n cheese and wings w/ fries. Comes with disappointing bread $42 order.

Portions- very small amount of fries and mac & cheese, Large chicken wings, Average catfish size. 1/2 piece of regular white bread with maybe a spot of butter on it, soggy. Not toasted. Just grabbed a piece of bread cut it in half n threw it in box.

Seasoning- Fries were flavored horribly! No flavor on chicken, over powering seasoning on catfish, and no flavor at all for mac & cheese.

Texture- The fried chicken and cat fish is not crispy at all, it’s fried but soggy like it was fried and then putting in togo container that was shut for 20 minutes or more. Fries also very soggy. The mac and cheese was stiff like it was set in container day before. From time it was handed to me to when I was at home sitting at my table was less than 4min. (I live close)

Wait time- 40minutes. Not busy at all. Told time for food to be done was 15min.(kids behind counter so I just assumed they not sure) I waited til 30min later (I’m patient) and kitchen said 4min. It was 11 minutes later when the food was ready.

Price- $42 for total order, way over priced I could see a total being maybe $30 tops.

Customer service- umm I don’t really know what to say on this as there’s 2 children (maybe 13years old, probly younger) behind the counter so my expectations are significantly lowered because they are kids. But there’s not really any type of customer service, no welcoming or thank you for coming, just order taken and that’s it.

Cleanliness- floors very sticky, table tops were sticky/dirty as well. It smells weird inside, stinky like musk inside, bathrooms were clean and supplies stocked!

This place was hyped up and I have been SO excited to try and was super disappointed today. Idk why I expected side of bread to be something more maybe like Texas toast but it is literally a 1/2 cut piece of white cheap bread n a spot of butter or something on it. Not toasted or anything just soggy feeling plain bread.

I hope that this family can save this as Topeka needs more family owned places, but honestly it needs complete redo on the food. Potentially more staff.

Recommendations- fry food til it’s crispy crispy, add creole to the mac and cheese I promise you it will make all the difference! Extra on the cheese. If you could use three cheeses, that would be amazing and I would recommend making the mac & cheese and having it sit in a crockpot on low because it will keep it loose cheesy and not thick.
Do Texas toast instead of plain white bread. Offer sauces for chicken, It might just be me, but I would label that as almost fried chicken, not chicken wings as I associate chicken wings with Buffalo Wild Wings. With buffalo or bbq etc sauce. I’m so sorry for my review I feel horrible to leave this but this is honesty and as much as it may suck and hurt to read this. It sucked for me to pay $42 on food I could hardly take more than a few bites.

Found this little hideaway place in the south east of Topeka at 21st street that serves these amazing BBQ pork ribs! Very meaty portion and had fried okra for the 1st time. The staff is group of hardworking young people and very friendly. Only 3 tables, mostly take away customers. Worth to visit them again!

Best Catfish I’ve had ever. J Rocks is my go to restaurant for Fried Catfish, sweet potatoes and mac n cheese. For my hubby he enjoys their French Fries and Fried Okra with his Catfish. The portions are huge and usually make 2 meals for me. All their other offerings look so good and one day when I’m not craving their super delicious, perfectly seasoned and fried catfish, I will venture into trying everything else that is offered

On the night that I went, the restaurant was sold out of everything! I got the last two plates of catfish, and I’m so happy that I lucked out! The portions of fish were huge and my two sides were green beans and fried okra. Everything was amazing! From the hospitality of the hostess to the food and the atmosphere… it was all five star. I am including a picture of my catfish combo with fried okra. You need to get yourself to J Rocks and get some of this amazing food! I’m definitely going back for some barbecue.
