Live music was a fun touch. The atmosphere overall was decent; that worked well for a relaxed BBQ joint. It’s the kind of place where you come for a filling meal and a chill night out.
If you’re in the Topeka area and craving BBQ with a bit of entertainment, J Rocks is worth checking out. Solid food, generous portions, and a local vibe make it a good spot for a casual dinner.
What I ordered, fried catfish w/ mac n cheese and wings w/ fries. Comes with disappointing bread $42 order.
Portions- very small amount of fries and mac & cheese, Large chicken wings, Average catfish size. 1/2 piece of regular white bread with maybe a spot of butter on it, soggy. Not toasted. Just grabbed a piece of bread cut it in half n threw it in box.
Seasoning- Fries were flavored horribly! No flavor on chicken, over powering seasoning on catfish, and no flavor at all for mac & cheese.
Texture- The fried chicken and cat fish is not crispy at all, it’s fried but soggy like it was fried and then putting in togo container that was shut for 20 minutes or more. Fries also very soggy. The mac and cheese was stiff like it was set in container day before. From time it was handed to me to when I was at home sitting at my table was less than 4min. (I live close)
Wait time- 40minutes. Not busy at all. Told time for food to be done was 15min.(kids behind counter so I just assumed they not sure) I waited til 30min later (I’m patient) and kitchen said 4min. It was 11 minutes later when the food was ready.
Price- $42 for total order, way over priced I could see a total being maybe $30 tops.
Customer service- umm I don’t really know what to say on this as there’s 2 children (maybe 13years old, probly younger) behind the counter so my expectations are significantly lowered because they are kids. But there’s not really any type of customer service, no welcoming or thank you for coming, just order taken and that’s it.
Cleanliness- floors very sticky, table tops were sticky/dirty as well. It smells weird inside, stinky like musk inside, bathrooms were clean and supplies stocked!
This place was hyped up and I have been SO excited to try and was super disappointed today. Idk why I expected side of bread to be something more maybe like Texas toast but it is literally a 1/2 cut piece of white cheap bread n a spot of butter or something on it. Not toasted or anything just soggy feeling plain bread.
I hope that this family can save this as Topeka needs more family owned places, but honestly it needs complete redo on the food. Potentially more staff.
Recommendations- fry food til it’s crispy crispy, add creole to the mac and cheese I promise you it will make all the difference! Extra on the cheese. If you could use three cheeses, that would be amazing and I would recommend making the mac & cheese and having it sit in a crockpot on low because it will keep it loose cheesy and not thick.
Do Texas toast instead of plain white bread. Offer sauces for chicken, It might just be me, but I would label that as almost fried chicken, not chicken wings as I associate chicken wings with Buffalo Wild Wings. With buffalo or bbq etc sauce. I’m so sorry for my review I feel horrible to leave this but this is honesty and as much as it may suck and hurt to read this. It sucked for me to pay $42 on food I could hardly take more than a few bites.
