First the place is beautiful inside and the food and the service was impeccable. Our waitress was awesome and my wife and I both ordered the 9oz. Filet which was perfect. I would highly recommend J. Morgans to everyone and I would definitely visit again being from Texas if we ever come back.

I didn’t have dinner. I went for drinks and dessert. Sat in the bar area and the bartender was awesome. Drinks were cold and the dessert was sweet. I have the strawberry shortcake and felt it was over baked. The ambiance was cool as the light fixtures reminded me of the Atlantis in the Bahamas. Ask for the train to be turned on.

Wish I could give this place negative stars. The service here is awful. When we first walked in we thought it was just one waiter, nope there were 3, but none of them were doing their jobs. They kept disappearing in the back for long periods, not to bring food out or anything. A waitress spent 5 minutes pretending to clean a table next to us.

15 yr old kids working at McDonald’s are better servers, more professional, and productive. Waiters working at a snail’s pace. 20 minutes after sat, and didn’t even get water. No wonder they weren’t busy on a Saturday morning. One of the worst run restaurants I’ve ever seen! The wait staff is horrendous.

We really wanted to enjoy this spot. Truly- wanted the recent reviews to be harsh but they were not. The quality of steak is low grade. The short rib was chewy. They want to charge 52$ for a piece of tough meat. The server was sweet but it was obvious she was very inexperienced. If you want to call yourself a steak house some things really need to change. Bring in a real quality steak and train your servers to be polished!

Our work group (8 people) chose J. Morgan’s for our holiday lunch and made reservations weeks in advance. I truly wish we hadn’t.

The most concerning issue was that there was no heat in the building. When we arrived, it was freezing. An attendee from a conference in another room told us their space was 40 degrees when they arrived and had only warmed to about 60. The waiter did bring over a small heater, but it barely helped.

At the very least, the restaurant should have called ahead to alert us that the heat was down so we could decide whether to tolerate the conditions or choose a different restaurant. (Spoiler: we would have chosen differently.)

Service-wise, our waiter was very kind but seemed unprepared. He didn’t know if there was a soup of the day. When we asked for tea, he brought a tea box but no sugar or honey. Several salads arrived without dressing. I asked for water with no lemon and got lemon. None of these are catastrophic on their own, but all together — especially in a freezing dining room — it added up.

For a restaurant with J. Morgan’s pricing, the food needs to be better than “fine.” A $30 macaroni and cheese with grilled chicken should be delicious, not just okay.

Our group unanimously agreed we won’t be returning, and we wouldn’t recommend J. Morgan’s to others.

I normally only leave well deserved positive reviews and I leave this review in the hopes it helps improve a much needed restaurant in Montpellier.

If you market yourself a “steak house” in a historic hotel understand what that means. The new atmosphere is pretty awful and I can only assume used as a breakfast area for the hotel in the morning. The decor is perfectly fine if we were having a complimentary buffet at any mid level Marriot property anywhere in the U.S. We waited way too long to be greeted at the table and our server, although very nice and trying her best was not at a level for a $242 check (before gratuity and zero alcohol).
I don’t want to say much more but I would mention we weren’t the only ones. Two other tables were having a very open conversation with each other about their general disappointment with their experience.
I am not in the restaurant business but I would recommend to whoever is in charge, don’t try and be something you are not. If you can’t be a high end steak house don’t be. If you can be a “good pub” with that level of food and staff, get a simple budget, add some TV’s and some fun, local decor… and run with that.
Best of Luck

I usually only review places I like, but in this case I felt I needed to warn others as a public service.
It might have been the worst dining experience we have ever had. Our server was lovely but well in the weeds. The place was clearly short staffed. The food was mediocre to inedible. My ceasar salad was good but the other two were crouton! salads!? Despite servers walking by with a glass of water, clearing the table took forever, as well as ordering and getting the food. What turned out to be a maintenance man!!?!, came over acting like he was a manager and asked how our meal was, took 2 of 6 plates and never came back for the rest, but walked by a number of times empty handed or with a jug of water. A third of everything that arrived was off or wrong and had to be fixed (too many to list). It was a continuous comedy of errors, which cost nearly $450 (4 of 6 people not drinking). They charged us for someone elses dinner bill and had to void and re-do that as well. Gosh it was all awful.

Just celebrated my 19th wedding anniversary with my husband at J Morgan’s and it was a great night! The food was delicious and all the people working there were so nice! We had the garlic bread (try it!), the wings (unique, but delicious), the house salad (so good), the Cobb salad (crazy huge and excellent), and the Marsala special (that sauce on mashed potatoes was so perfect). For dessert it was difficult to decide on which cake to get (the couple sitting next to us told us we had to try one of their homemade cakes), but we landed on the carrot cake. That cake won’t soon be forgotten! It really was a wonderful celebration evening!

(If you go here, or anywhere, have patience on the staff. All restaurants are trying to get back to normal. It’s not easy. So relax and be kind. We are still all in this together.)

In from Chicago, visiting family from out of town and had dinner here on my last night. I was very impressed with the meal. The steak was very good, and I was very happy that you didn’t need any steak sauce. Because there wasn’t any sauce on the table, I took that as a sign that the steak is good. I was right. The vegetables weren’t special and they were good, but garlic mashed potatoes (I forget what the actual side is called) were delicious. The portions were just right.

I enjoyed the rustic feel of the surrounding area. The wait for the meal is what you can expect for a steak house. The service was great. Mentioned to my parents and sister it worth visiting when they get a chance to go.

My brother ordered a salad that looked incredible, so when I do come back, I will be trying that.

I had the best experience with the most delicious tasting steak and shrimp that I can ever remember having. The service here was way above the best. The staff catered to every need I requested. This is maybe the only restaurant that I would actually fly in from out of state to eat at again and again. I did get my dessert to go. But was so delighted to eat my dessert in the hotel that I passed out from the Glee that my stomach was wonderfully filled with fresh food. Larry Nicoles the head chef was great. I apologize if I spelled your name wrong. But my stomach is still smiling. And my taste buds are still reminiscing.
