We are a small family owned, community based restaurant. Our family has owned and operated the J & L since 1998. John McMahon, my husband and partner, passed away on June 14, 2022. We are working very hard to carry on his love of community, country, family, and service. We love each and every one of you and are so blessed to be in this community during the good and bad times.

Incredible find! We stop in every time we pass Sterling. Never had a bad meal and service is amazing. Staff are friendly and attentive. Food is delicious, huge portions and always hot. Great pancakes, bacon and hash browns. Finally tried the pork tenderloin. Delicious and almost as big as the plate! Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed!

My cousins from Nebraska met my husband and me in Sterling, CO today, so that one of them could come home with us for a fun weekend of Christmas Markets and a girl shopping trip. We decided to eat lunch together before our trips back to Wood River NE and Castle Pines CO. This is what brought us to the J and L Cafe. The service was wonderful, the restaurant was so clean with a visually fun atmosphere. We could enjoy breakfast or lunch. Our entire group could hardly decide what to order because everything was homemade and sounded wonderful. The breakfast burrito (side of green chili) and Omlette were excellent. Hot Roast Beef sandwich with mashed potatoes was delicious. Homemade chicken tenders were so crispy and juicy. There were homemade pies and cinnamon rolls. My dinner can the soup or salad, I chose the cabbage soup, everyone had a taste and loved it. One diner sitting close to us said she only orders the liver and onions when she eats there. It looked amazing. Homemade comfort food at its finest. I could go on about the restaurant and food but you need to try it when stopping in Sterling CO. Maybe just stop so that you can enjoy this restaurant.

Check out these cheese fries “loaded with cheddar cheese” and 2 untouched orders of fried mushrooms. Fries also taste like yesterday’s taters sent through a microwave. Yum. Why is the 2nd box of mushrooms already half empty? I certainly didn’t pay half price for it, I know that.
Edit: Good news! The half order of mushrooms came with enough long blonde hair cooked in that I can start a weave. I’ve always wanted blonde highlights!

Food was really good, fries were just ok, not a huge fan of the crinkle fry. Service was decent. I like that they show their support for their local 4H members too! Very spacious inside. We got our food to go, they provided napkins and plenty of ketchup for the fries 🙂

From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted warmly and almost immediately shown to a table. Our server, Erica was warm and bubbly.
As we waited for our orders, we could hear the employees joking and teasing each other. You can tell they are family in the best ways.
I had the chicken fried steak, which was pan fried and not deep fried. It was light and didn’t sit heavy. I enjoyed their iced tea so much i had three cups there and one to go! My friend had the Green Chili Philly and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.
We were even there to witness a local artist hang a hand made wooden sign up in the middle of the store. It was a proud moment for the owner.

Do not ever complain about anything you order from J&L Cafe or else Suzanne, the owner, will ask you not to come back.
We had breakfast there this morning. I ordered a cup of oatmeal and cinnamon toast. My husband ordered an omelette. My oatmeal was very watery. It had no flavor because of all the water in it. The cinnamon toast came out with no butter on it. They had only sprinkled cinnamon over the top of the toast. It did not have a combination of cinnamon and sugar or butter! Just very dry toast with cinnamon sprinkled on top. It was horrible too. My husband’s toast was cremated! I sent Suzanne a personal text message today and she asked us to never come back because obviously we are not happy with their food. We have lived here 3-1/2 years and we have eaten there many times. Today was the first time we have ever complained about their food.
Please read other people’s reviews where they were dissatisfied with their meal. Rather than telling them she is sorry they had a bad meal, she just tells them not to come back. That is no way for an owner of an establishment to behave. Suzanne is not a good person. I wish people could read what she sent me. Very disturbing, abnormal behavior.

We had ate dinner here last night, my 16 yr old son ordered a pork tenderloin. When he had taken the first couple of bites it was cold and raw. After taking 2 bites he had lost his appetite. He didn’t want to say anything and cause any issues and we just wanted to leave. Nobody had finished their meals and we go some to go boxes. Out waitress seemed nice but didn’t give the best service. People bumped into my son’s car seat and only 1 person was apologetic. When we went to pay for our food, the cashier rung everything up and it was $67 for 4 meals and drinks. Then asked how our food was, I was honest and mentioned the issue with my son’s food we were still going to pay for the food, in which we did pay. We brought it up so that the staff was aware and could correct the issue. The cashier had instantly became rude and started to ring everything back up and the total was still $67. So the fact you guys say that we didn’t pay for 1 meal is ridiculous! And then whoever is responding to these reviews is extremely rude and disrespectful, it’s a wonder this place is still running when people don’t know how to be professional, they just know how to make fools of themselves! I won’t recommend this place to anyone!

This is a staple in Sterling. Decent food, but I would not recommend the coffee. It was burnt and extremely watered down. I got the truck driver breakfast with French toast, eggs, eggs and bacon. It was pretty good. Lots of food for sure.
