Reviews
Their chow Mei fun with shrimp is my favorite thing to order. It is so good!
For years, I have supported JJ China in the western part of the city and have always been satisfied with what I ordered. But recently, I ordered Szechuan Chicken which is a spicy stir-fried Chinese dish featuring tender chicken, dried red chilies and pungent “Szechuan Peppercorns” that create a unique glossy sauce numbing hot flavor and typically made with onion pieces, bell peppers, garlic, ginger and a spicy sauce offering a wonderful savory, slightly sweet and intense heat profile.
Recently I ordered this dish once again and my brother-in-law ordered the Szechuan Shrimp and we were both very disappointed and somewhat shocked. The dish we had come to know trust and love had strayed so far from what it should be and was to something totally unrecognizable and the chicken in my dish was totally unrecognizable leaving me to question even if it was chicken I had been served as I have never had anything like this from JJ China before.
First off, the sauce was somewhat watery and very oily which being in the food industry for 12 years myself I knew JJ China was trying to cut cost and corners leaving what was typically a wonderful satisfying dish from them totally unrecognizable and quite frankly disgusting looking. Both my dish with the so-called Chicken and my “brother – in – laws” with the shrimp was served with shredded carrots and shredded onions which immediately raised a red flag that they were using prepackaged Shredded vegetables to cut cost and save time.
There was no sign of the green peppers that normally came with the dishes, and the sauce was disgusting both watery and oily. And like I said I had no clue what kind of meat I had been served as it was served very strangely, normally you get beautiful pieces of chicken with my dish, but what I was served apparently had been reheated to save costs and was small skinny long hard pieces of some kind of meat.
Now my pot stickers I ordered were more familiar but also tasted different, again I was not sure really what was in them where before I would have never given it a second thought previously. I was not given sauce to dunk the pot stickers in which was most likely a deliberate choice of the owners and the cook at JJ China to cut costs. I get everyone is hurting with the high costs of food and meat, but I can guarantee this is no way to expect to stay in business and once the trust is broken it rarely can be repaired.
I will likely never order from them again and will move back to Bo Bo China where quality and pride still seem to be in place and practiced and Bo Bo China will let you order a large Hot & Sour Soup or Egg drop Soup where JJ China will not. Also, at Bo Bo China I do not have to question what kind of meat I am eating because it is recognizable and looks appetizing and the dish is consistent in preparation every time you order it.
I feel very let down and disappointed by JJ China and when the meat they use is so unrecognizable you need to question what it is and what you might be eating and then using water-soaked shredded carrots and onions, it’s time to walk away.
We just ate inside for the first time and the lady who took our order really took care of us, and it honestly made me love this place more. It’s even better having it as fresh as you can!
The chicken egg foo yong was by far the best I’ve ever had in Omaha. It was perfectly seasoned and not greasy at all. The gravy was amazing, not too thick, just the perfect consistency. The crab rangoon was incredible, and the spring rolls were delicious too. I would give this place a 10 out of 10. I can’t wait to eat here again and will definitely be recommending it.
