It had been years since I came here. Today was the day to indulge in some good Japanese food.

I had the agedashi tofu and tako Kara age to start. Portions were small, but the food tasted good. I had the nigiri sushi & noodle set lunch special. The soba was well cooked, and the sushi rice was well-seasoned.

The restaurant gets very busy during lunch time. Tables and chairs are pretty near to each other. They have outdoor seating too, which is perfect for bigger groups.

Parking lot is decent size, but could be difficult to get a spot during peak hours.

I would rate this place a 3.3 out of 5 stars.

There’s plenty of space for parking so that’s always a relief! When my friend and I walked in, we were greeted by the host who was very sweet and friendly. We decided to sit outside since the tables inside had a wait time and the weather was finally cooler.

Here is the list of things we ordered:

Appetizers:
Shiso Kurage
I love shiso and the crunchy texture of jellyfish so this was a nice, refreshing start to dinner

Squid in butter soy sauce
The flavor is there but the presentation was kind of eh and the sauce was watery

Skewers:
Japanese sausage
Delicious! Maybe a tiny bit overcooked but I enjoyed the sweet and savory bite

Gyuu Kushiyaki
The meat was soft and tender but it definitely needed more salt or umami factor

Shishito
I personally don’t love shishito peppers so this one was just okay for me

Yakitori Negima
The chicken was juicy and tender but similar to the gyuu kushiyaki, it lacked flavor

Sushi:
I ordered a variety (ikura, hotate, salmon, sweet shrimp, etc) and honestly, I thought it was just okay. The presentation for the sweet shrimp was lovely though!

Overall, I’m not sure if I was impressed by Izakaya Wa but I heard great things about their curry and other dishes so I’d love to come back and try!

Great little Japanese spot in the Memorial area. Fresh sushi, tasty small dishes, and friendly service. Cozy, busy, and worth the visit every time. Highly recommend!

My boyfriend has been craving a good katsu curry since visiting Japan and this really hit the spot. We also got the chirashi bowl and some skewers, which were all excellent. No wait for 2 people on a Friday night, which was a pleasant surprise.

This is the best Japanese food I ever had. It’s good as the food in Japan. The salmon is extremely fresh. The curry was very complex and delicious. Service was amazing 10000/10

We are really disappointed with ‘Ginger Pork, Shoga Yaki’ ‘. It not Japanese style at all. Small piece of pork and onion….
Miso soup was okay. Sunomono, cucumber with vinegar does not have taste.
I like Izakaya Wa. But not this dish.

If you want to enjoy authentic Japanese food in Houston, this is the place to go. Everything we ate was delicious, but the pressed mackerel sushi was especially outstanding. The atmosphere feels like a true Japanese “izakaya,” making you feel like you’re in Japan. The staff are all friendly, and the owner, in particular, is a wonderful person who is kind and truly cares about the customers!!

Great neighborhood Japanese restaurant located behind a strip center. Not a lot of tables and always a crowd. Authentic food.

The restaurant layout itself is pretty crowded and small, but I personally didn’t mind it. It’s more like a traditional Japanese setting, so I liked it. Because they were quite busy when we went, I had to keep asking to refill my water, and they kept forgetting orders or accidentally bringing other people’s orders. The seaweed salad was good. Their tempura selection was very diverse, but I wish the dipping sauce it came in was more flavorful. For all of their fried options, the batter and the fry were very delicious and perfectly well made.

Amazing and delicious food. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and sat immediately. Our server was friendly and helpful. Everything we had from the miso soup, skewers, yellowtail collars, Onigiri and sushi roll was out of this world flavorful and all the seafood was fresh. We arrived when the restaurant opened and it filled up fast.
