Izakaya MEW, a popular secret gem tucked below the busy street of East 35th street. It is known to be a comfortable and lively pub-style atmosphere parallel to izakayas found in Japan. It combines the flavors of traditional Japanese cuisine with the dynamic trends of New York’s food culture.
Late-night izakaya for soba salad, sushi, yakitori & other Japanese fare in a spartan-looking space.

Of note are the following: Uni Nigiri Sushi, Black Dragon Roll, Nigiri Set (an excellent choice for the less adventurous), Tan Shio, Kani Oshixushi, and the Homemade Tiramisu.
The Homemade Tiramisu is the best I have ever had, and that was the opinion of the other 6 people in our group.
We ordered the kimchi udon, okonomiyaki, and karaage. The kimchi udon was flavorful and comforting, with a nice balance of spice and savory broth. The okonomiyaki was cooked well, topped with rich sauce and plenty of flavor in every bite. The karaage was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, making it a standout dish at the table.
Overall, the food was satisfying and well-prepared, and the variety on the menu makes it easy to find something for everyone. Izakaya MEW is definitely worth visiting if you’re craving casual Japanese dishes in NYC.
The food was delicious! We ordered Kimchi Cream udon, Katsu Don(not pictured), Kushiyaki Set and Toro Taku Crispy Rice. We loved the Kimchi cream udon!!! So good!
We’d definitely go back again next time when we’re in NYC.
My friend treated me, so the food tasted even better! Treat this review with a grain of salt, because the food was free hahahahah
What truly impressed me was their creative cocktail menu. I especially loved the Matchaholic, it’s such a fun twist on Japanese flavors and culture.
Note: they won’t seat your party until everyone has arrived, so be sure to be on time.
Considering the price, I’d personally rate it a 4/5 – but given how expensive NYC is in general, the pricing makes sense. It is on the pricier side, but I’d still recommend trying it at least once.
no windows due to basement level and the noise level is quite high even below max capacity. they do get busy and it was difficult to have a conversation without raising my voice. i wish there was some noise dampening and better acoustics in the space.
