We stopped in before a show at The Paramount with no expectations other than a simple ramen fix. We ordered a few appetizers to start, followed by ramen, and everything was… fine. Not bad, just pretty average. With so many stronger options in Oakland, I’m not sure I’d return—not because of a bad experience, but because the competition is simply better.

The words that kept popping into my head when describing the food at Itani is “clean eating”. The broth for the Oxtail Ramen was not fatty as anticipated and was soothing even. The Spicy Shrimp Ramen packed more of a flavor punch and was well balanced in spice. The Fried Chicken Sandwich was very juicy and flavorful. The slaw is proper spicy, so be warned. Will definitely be back to try more.

Terrible experience at Itani Ramen in Oakland.

I waited 35 minutes for an Oxtail Ramen, only to receive a completely wrong vegetarian bowl when I got back to my office in the rain. I walked back to fix it, and the server, Chelsea, admitted the mistake but offered no apology, no compensation, and said the correct dish would “take a long time.”

When I asked to at least take the incorrect dish, she said she had already thrown it away and then pointed at the trash can, telling me I could grab it from there if I wanted. Completely unacceptable.

When I asked for a manager, I was told none were available, the phone line was constantly busy, and after making me wait, she handed me a number and said:

“please don’t come back.”

To top it off, the manager email she gave me doesn’t even exist.

Disorganized, disrespectful, and genuinely shocking behavior. I won’t return.

This review is based on my delivery order.

I had the Recovery Meal; includes your choice of a ramen bowl, 3 pieces veggie or pork gyoza, negi chashu mini donburi or small salad, and a non-alcoholic drink. I opted for the Veggie Ramen, veggie gyoza, salad, and Yuzu lemonade.

The veggie ramen was flavorful. The veggie gyoza with the dipping sauce, yummy! The dressing on the salad made it so delicious. I’m a huge fan of yuzu and the yuzu lemonade really hit the spot!

I appreciate restaurants that have okay-based and vegan options. I hope they expand on these options.

Vegan veggie vegetarian plant-based.

Small, cozy environment – perfect for ramen soup and a drink. Service is excellent. Small, easy to navigate menu. Best on cold days, imo.

From out of town, first time here. Nice place, lots of diners which made us about comfortable trying it. The miso pork ramen was excellent. Beautiful broth, melt in your mouth pork and the egg was done perfectly. Our server Caleb was excellent too. Quick wit to him and he made us feel at home.

Crazy good food! This little place was so cozy and our waiter took the time to tell us about the art and the story behind it. The food was incredible and rich. Would definitely come back.

Grabbed a seat close to Closing but didn’t feel any pressure to rush my meal. The sloppy style gyoza was unique. Miso ramen was classic. Strawberry mochi were exceptionally good.

A quite authentic ramen joint in downtown Oakland. It comes really close to being fabulous but over time has catered to more Americanization of Japanese ramen.

Everything feels authentic to the 85% mark but then something gives away the compromise.

The gyoza was great until they sprinkled ginger and mayo on top. The ox tail ramen lacked a bit of depth. And not sure where they got their kimchi from but certainly unpassable by Korean standards.

However, it does hold together for a decent meal in a space with modern, industrial vibe.

The concept of Itanis is great. I just wouldn’t return as a seeker of pure-bred ramen.
