If your idea of good Italian food is massive servings and lots of red sauce , a la Olive Garden and Maggiano’s, this isn’t the place for you. Quality food comes in smaller portions and takes longer to prepare. Prices, for the quality, are very reasonable. Short rib ravioli was amazing and Caesar salad with anchovies was excellent. Not the overly dressed, commercial dressing you get in many places. My only complaint: mediocre beer options and no tea, iced or hot.
My daughter had pesto fettuccine with artichokes (without eggplant). She loved the dish. I had spaghetti marinara with a side of Impossible Meatballs. I thought 2 meatballs for $7 was a little pricy but they were so big and filling it made sense. I know plant based meat is not cheap. The meatballs were a little tough but very tasty. The best part of my meal was the marinara sauce. It was dark, rich and flavorful. Perfectly balanced. I loved it. I was too full for dessert but my daughter had peppermint chip gelato. She said it was delicious.
Our service was excellent. The server was always there when we needed him and he was very polite. All the workers were busy doing their jobs and were attentive to all the tables.
The only thing that was missing was some soft Italian music in the background. The place needs some background ambiance.
I didn’t know what to expect after reading mixed reviews but I was really happy with our experience at Italia.
The service seems very unorganized. We literally had 4 different staff members (5 if you count the manager) stopping by to help with various things. It made things feel a bit rushed and disorganized. But not a huge deal… tho we still had no idea who our actual waiter was even after we left.
Anyway, the main issue was the food. It was just very disappointing. The red sauce was just not good and it was on most of our dishes in one form or another. And the chicken in my chicken parm was incredibly salty (I could barely choke it down) and was a very small portion. It seemed rather odd that the chicken parm plate consisted of a small piece of chicken with red sauce on it… and that’s it. I had to order a side of pasta with it (which was a garlic and herb butter sauce and was by far the best thing any of us ordered).
Anyway we took remnants of three different dishes home with us in to-go boxes and nobody could bring themselves to eat them afterwards. Our other two kids who had stayed at home didn’t like the food either. So it was a pretty disappointing experience… and not a cheap one either. I hope they will be able to improve over time. I’d like to see them succeed, but if their food doesn’t improve significantly it is hard to see that happening.
We came in the door but no one greeted us for several moments so we were unsure if we even came in the correct door. One person finally acknowledged us and said they needed to get someone. She seated us right away which was nice. The atmosphere was relaxing and laid back. It is small with about 20 tables or so. Not really sure.
We waited several moments for someone to come by. He told us it was Happy Hour for the next 25 minutes and showed us the two drinks and appetizers that were available. He left. It seemed like a long time between his comings and goings. We ordered Fettuccini Alfredo ($18) with extra chicken ($6) and a Caesar salad ($9); Spaghetti Carbonara ($19) with extra Italian sausage ($6); and Prawn & White Clams ($17).
To start, bread is supposed to come with the meal. It never showed up until we were ready to leave. Our food came but the salad did not. The manager stopped by so we told him but he never came back. We saw our waiter again and told him. He finally brought the salad.
I had the prawns and clams. The waiter explained it didn’t come with pasta but I could add it for $4. I should have added it. The portion is embarrassingly small–five clams (one unopened) and five 21/25 shrimp. The dish is baked with butter and garlic. Not only was it small but horribly overcooked. The clams were tough and chewy but not quite as bad as the shrimp (they were too small to be prawns). The shrimp were very rubbery. They were also flavorless–not a bit of seasoning or salt or even any garlic flavor.
A side note on the prawns, the lady behind me asked how mine was. I told her it was terrible. She told me her experience last month was exactly the same. It was overcooked and flavorless. Dinner their first time was also not especially good but they were giving it a second chance. Unfortunately, we left before we could hear how their dinner was but the look on their faces when looking at their food was telling.
My husband had the Carbonara. It was good. Nothing spectacular but good. It was weirdly garnished though. It came with three “dilly” beans and overcooked tomatoes on the top–the lady behind me also commented that the garnish was out of place. The sausage was also good, a little dry but the flavor was there. The marinara sauce it came in was delicious.
The Fettuccini was also very under seasoned. My 11-year-old son commented to me that his Alfredo sauce was much better when he made it at home. The amount of chicken added to the dish was also not worth the $6 price tag. Now the highlight of the meal was the Caesar salad. Even though the portion was small, it was delicious. I would come back just for that and the bread.
To their credit, they did not charge me for the “prawns” although they were going to. The full bill was over $90. They automatically include an 18% gratuity which is distributed between all the staff on shift (my husband didn’t notice this so he tipped an additional 20% which was not deserved). I like to tip based on service received and not because I feel I have to. If I had my way tipping would be abolished in this country.
For a town like Duvall that already has two higher-end dining experiences (Flavour Bistro and The Grange) I think the prices are too high for what they are serving, and for what they are billing as “Family Focused Italian.” If they want family-focused Italian, go with more family-style dishes. I mean go all in.
If I am paying money like that for small portions, they need to be phenomenal tasting and the service needs to be amazing. I know Chef Langan has some work to do but my expectations were much higher. I would love to go back and give it a try but I will definitely wait to see if they make it past a year.
