Updated Review September 2025 – still our favorite place for authentic Mexican seafood dishes! We have tried some other places, recently, only to be disappointed and reminded that this place is “the one.”

Always recommended-

The Ceviche Mixtos – incredibly fresh seafood mix with tostadas on the side.

Caldo de mariscos- seafood soup that is perfect for these cooler fall days.

Shrimp tacos filled with fresh toppings- my husband’s fav.

Updated Review April 23,2022 – first really warm day in April and we knew exactly where we were going after our walk! Islas Veracruz is without doubt one of the best overall restaurants we have found in the northern Chicgo burbs.

The variety of seafood and quality of ingredients are always fresh and delicious. The Margarita could be a bit stronger, but the food never fails to delight!!

This time we tried our seafood staples of the mixed seafood soup and tostadas mixtas (also mixed seafood) along with the steak tacos.

My husband loved the tacos, but I prefer their seafood dishes overall. What we also appreciate is that all those fresh ingredients they serve are not overly seasoned or salty, allowing you to enjoy the food and season to taste with their fresh limes wedges, crazy spicy, but delicious verde, or just eat as is.

Highly, highly recommend this place. And the waitress, who communicates well enough to take our order, is very charming and kind. She takes care of us by checking in but isn’t that type of waitstaff that comes to your table every 15 minute- we love that!!

We found a new favorite with Islas Veracruz. I saw that some said it was a bit pricey, but when you see the quality of the ingredients, care that goes into the presentation, and amount of seafood in each order, I feel it is worth it.

My husband and I stopped in for lunch and were greeted by a friendly young woman who only spoke a bit of English, but made it easy to communicate. And, personally, the language barrier is a keeper in my book, as it tells me they are catering to a largely Spanish-speaking crowd that will have natural expectations about the food – keeping it more authentic for the rest of us.

We ordered the mixed seafood ceviche tostadas, the mixed seafood soup, and shrimp tacos. Everything was so well presented, so fresh, and so packed with seafood. I would recommend all of them, especially that warm frothy soup broth for these cold Chicago days.

Their salsa is also fantastic, clearly homemade and is partnered with one of the most flavorful Verdes I have had in a long time.

We will definitely be back for more food and some margaritas next time!!

This place is by far the worst I’ve ever been to. They had my husband and I waiting at the door for 15+ minutes without anyone coming to greet us or give us any direction. Once they sat us down, they took 38 minutes to come take our order and that was because I went to ask if we were going to get a server assigned. The servers were very unfriendly and unprofessional. The place was not busy like other restaurants so no excuse for the poor service. The only good thing about this place was the live music everything else I do not recommend.

Unfortunately came to find this place not what it used to be, food not fresh nor at least warm after waiting for at least 15 min. The langostinos quality were to not ever eat there again. Our waitress was nice but she wasn’t really taking care of us even tho there were no more than three tables for two waitresses. We came in a Saturday which we have done it before for drinks and music but this last time the music was unnecessarily loud. We had to be yelling at the waitress. Drinks tasted cheap. Not just talking about the alcohol but the mixes. Just our last visit to this place for sure.

This was three years ago…. We loved it, when the day spicy that’s exactly what they mean. Food tastes fresh might take some time but it’s worth it. Friendly service.

I came here on Saturday for Valentine’s Day with my family. The place was great it was packed, the atmosphere was lively, and they had live music plus a DJ, which made the night feel special. However, the first band that performed was unfortunately not good. They were out of tune, and the bass player seemed to be playing random notes. It really affected the vibe at the beginning of the evening. I think they need more practice before performing at a full restaurant, especially on a special occasion like Valentine’s Day.On the positive side, the second group was amazing definitely one of the best I’ve heard there. They completely turned the night around. I really hope the restaurant considers bringing them back for future events.Overall, we still enjoyed our time, but the first performance could definitely have been better.

Great food and great atmosphere. A very authentic Mexican restaurant that serves good and fresh seafood. I am not a local guy, traveled from Seattle to visit family. So I understand the sentiment of people saying it’s expensive. The ceviche/salsa is delicious! The drinks are great! Red Snapper with the garlic was really good. The octopus/pulpo was cooked to perfection -soft and tender. Overall, this place is great to come with family or a date. I would reccomend.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Placed a door dash order and waited 1 HOUR at 9pm until they finally cancelled my order saying the restaurant was closed which was completely false but they are open til 2am literally just laziness!

To be honest the service was horrible I asked for a horchata 30 minutes pass and I still didn’t get it so I decided to leave they would take forever to sit people down when the place wasn’t as packed as other places all the people that were there said they’re food was cold or that it took forever for them to receive it honestly don’t recommend very unprofessional only thing that was good was the live music both groups had good music

To me it’s funny the people that work there are leaving good reviews on their own restaurant but if you were there on the 14th as a customer you know the service was horrible they never asked you if everything was ok the food was cold I never received my drink even though the waitress passed multiple times worst spot ever they weren’t as packed as other places so there was no excuses for the lack of good service

We got our order to go and live 20 min away. Everything was still hot and fresh. I can’t wait to go back. We came on a Friday but didn’t stayed for the music and dancing because it was the night before new years. But we definitely will be back

The seafood pineapple was delicious. Spicy salsa was actually spicy. Empanadas were just ok, I would not order them again. Service was pretty good. The margaritas were huge and tasted good, but I am not sure they had any alcohol in them. Overall pretty decent.
