After living on gas station food while trucking , I was seriously craving something healthier. Most truck stops only have a few options besides Subway, and when they do offer something decent the price can be crazy depending on the city and state. I’m not paying $20 for a combo meal and drink — you’re tripping .

So instead I decided to spend my money at Ishtar Gate Troutdale, and I’m really glad I did.

For about the same price, I got fresh, flavorful food that kept me full all day .

Beef Shawarma Wrap
Absolutely amazing. I had never tried shawarma before (I usually grab a gyro), but after this meal I might be switching teams. The wrap was huge, well seasoned, and perfectly grilled.

Iraqi Pickles + Hot Sauce
First time trying Iraqi pickles and I was blown away. I asked the lady working there what she thought and she said they were good — but as a pickle lover, they were AMAZING. With a few dashes of the hot sauce they serve with them, they were the perfect crunchy snack to go along with that beast of a shawarma wrap.

I was also tempted to grab the sambosas, but since I’m in a truck and don’t have a good way to heat food up, I decided to save that for next time. Fresh is always better anyway.

Funny enough, my buddy and I play a game called “Scary Shawarma Kiosk” on Roblox , so I joked about sending him a video of me actually eating shawarma. Turned out way better than expected and made the stop even more memorable.

Also have to say Troutdale, OR is a beautiful place with a really relaxing vibe. One thing I love about my new career in trucking is getting to discover unique local restaurants near my drop-off points instead of the usual highway food.

⭐ If you’re in the area, definitely stop by and grab a shawarma wrap with a side of Iraqi pickles. You won’t be disappointed.

I’m a truck driver and I always have to try new and different places, and I have been to a lot all over the country. I must say the food was amazing fresh and on point. The lamb shawarma wrap was so delicious lamb melts in your mouth and the Philly cheesesteak had such a great unique taste to it and you have to get the baklava… The owner is a very nice Guy I will definitely be coming back here next time I pass through.

They’ve lived up to their high rating on Google. The food was excellent. The service friendly. I had lamb and chicken. The tea that came with it was excellent too.

Not sure how the almost 5 rating on Google came to be. I am trying to be honest here. Look at the menu and price, and then look at the decor from the 90’s. And then the location. And then compare with a similar place in the city that has cheaper prices with better decor.

While the food came promptly, it was nothing special. It wasn’t bad, but it was also something that you would just exepct from similar establishment.

Maybe I am out of touch with the prices, but inflation is getting nuts that $22 may be the going rate nowadays for a plate of kabob rice?

Our server didn’t come to us serving a glass water without being asked. Never came to check on us if all is ok after serving. And ran off before the receipt was properly printed (I had to call her back)… and the place had only one other guest at the time. And to be fair, we still added the standard tip.

It’s a truck stop area, and sorry, I feel it’s overpriced for the area and what we’re getting as a package. BTW, if you notice what actually came and what showed in the menu. The menu shows a full big oval plate of rice, and a separate bowl of salad. What came was just a single dinner plate of everything.

The very lack of communication, is my main issue, followed by others. My vegetarian gf grabbed rice, some veggies on top and a bowl of lentil soup with a cup of juice. It was buffet style I got a falafel wrap, fries, and a soda. Total $58. I had asked for something spicy, and a sauce to go with my wrap. I got a packet of a no named hotsauce, 2 ketcheps and mayo. No tzatziki suace or anything, I didn’t ask for anything more. No water, bad communication, with loud music. The host just paced back and forth, along with another person. When asked for a check, a long discussion ensued with the employees, it took almost 7 minutes. I know they were discussing the charge, I’ve been in the industry for almost 3 decades it was obvious. The receipt, was just that. No listing of the prices or a chance to tip, just a receipt. $58 for sub par service, and no explanation about how to order, prices on the buffet when we arrived. I knew my cost, which was a wrap and fries, cause it was on the wall, the buffet not so much. All they had to do is be transparent and helpful. A simple “Welcome In” and let us know how the place operated, would have been a huge difference. The food was good however, the lentil soup and falafal wrap was top notch.
