WARNING: DO NOT VISIT IR GUJE FOR ANY REASON AT ALL. EVEN IF YOU WERE DYING, JUST CRAWL A FEW BLOCKS TO MAYO CLINIC.
My friends and I have greedy palletes and love trying new & exotic flavors. Our close & rather diverse friend group like ours (Asian, African, Indian, African American, Caucasian, etc.) has high expectations when it comes to food spots that express authentic flavors.
We were recommended this spot as a choice for Somali/African cuisine. The outside of the building looks dingy. Never forget though that this is common for viet, Indian, & even American spots that are truly delicious hidden gem/Hole-in-the-wall food joints.
As we went in, we were not greeted until only we came damn near into kitchen to see if the place was even open. We asked to see a menu & we were told that there was ‘no menu. I have chicken, beef, tea…’
our initial reaction was what the actual is going on here but food can be a universal language when done right. so we asked for 3 jabati wrap, to which he nodded in agreement. We also asked for 2 sambusa.
What was brought out to us was the attached photo. A bowl of soup & BONES. Since there were 3 of us, we were expecting to have a plate each.
No … he pointed at the bread on the side & said something along the lines of ‘for you 3’. We were fully aware that it is common in African cuisines to share from a big plate from previous restaurant experience. But this was a small plate. I guess The soup flavor was OK. We talked about how our moms cook something similar but with more care & way more seasoning.
I should have taken a better photo of it, but this is all we got. If you examine closely, you can see that It was literally 50% potatoes & 50% bones with literal nibbles of meat on them. He then brought out an extra bowl of soup only for my African buddy for some reason with virtually NO MEAT IN IT ONCE AGAIN. JUST A SINGLE POTATO IN THE MIDDLE. I guess he was trying to make it look like he was licking our boots & giving us the service of a lifetime??? He should have tried harder by at least giving the other 2 guys at the table a bowl of soup as well. Extremely insulting.
He then suddenly brought his own plate over at the table next to us and started eating. The bones on his plate had delicious seasoned meat on it. We all said stuff along the lines of ‘that looks good’ when he was eating his food. We were not offered any of that.
Side note: when/if people bring food around others, there’s a slight implication to offer a bite or maybe a ‘wanna try it?’. None of that. He was ripping actual meat off bones while we had just bones & potatoes with 100 pieces of flatbread. He sat down eating his food that actually looked like there was time put into it while we sat and slurped soup the entire time.
Fast forward to when we had enough of the soup. On our way out he finally brought out the sambusa that we initially ordered but we forgot because the experience was already shitty enough.
He then went to the counter and started counting in his head with fingers on how much to charge us. He said ‘I give you discount’ & proceeded to charge my card for $32 after tax.
I wish people would put differences aside and just serve some food. I guess we should’ve had one of our Somali friends with us so we could have had an even slightly better experience? Not entirely sure. Should have just walked out the moment he said there was no menu or the moment that he was trying to get us to actually pay for that horrific experience he might call food.
DO NOT APPROACH THIS STORE AT ALL IN ANY INSTANCE EVER. WE LEFT FEELING UNSATISFIED AND TOTALLY RIPPED OFF.
