Definitely recommend arriving right at the opening hour or shortly after, due to the popularity and the quickly forming line of customers. The average wait time was approximately 1.5 hours to arrive at the counter, order, and be seated quickly.
The staff is all very kind and the seating and environment inside is spacious and clean. Highly recommend the peach-glazed pork belly bites seen in the picture as these are by far the best I’ve ever had yet.
Overall, this restaurant is a must-stop site we searched ahead of time before arriving in Austin. I recommend making some time to stop by and check it out, you won’t regret it! And make sure not to eat before so you arrive with ample appetite, trust me, you will have leftovers!
This was my second visit to Interstellar BBQ. The first time, I waited over an hour in line only to find most items sold out. The pork ribs were just okay, and the sausage wasn’t anything special, though the mac & cheese was excellent.
Yesterday I got lucky: almost no line! I waited 30–40 minutes, and this time I finally got to try the full menu and wow, totally different experience.
The turkey sandwich surprised me in the best way. I’m not usually a turkey fan, but it was juicy, flavorful, and a great choice if you’re skipping red meat.
The short ribs with chimichurri were a highlight: tender, rich, and packed with flavor. Highly recommended.
The special of the day, a lamb leg barbacoa, was absolutely delicious melt-in-your-mouth perfection. And yes, the mac & cheese remains a must-order.
Another huge plus: the staff is incredible. Friendly, smiling, and so welcoming from the pit masters to the sides team, cashier, and even the crew outside clearing tables.
If you’re in Austin and love BBQ, Interstellar is a must-try. Just arrive early… the good stuff goes fast.
Drove 1.5hrs , waited 2 hrs in line, spent $125 … it’s one and done for me.
It’s great if you live in the area.
No plate options so expect to dish out $$$if you want to try everything.
– brisket had good flavor but not as juicy/tender as everyone makes it
– pork belly were tender (not juicy) and good flavor (my fave of the three)
– beef short ribs were dry and decent flavor.
– mac and cheese were really good
– cream corn is nothing to brag about
Recommend ordering sandwiches they offer instead if you won’t want to spend that much.
Decent indoor seating and more benches outdoor.
We arrived on Sunday at 12:40 PM and waited close to an hour and a half before getting to the front to order. I will say on weekends even though they are open until 3/4 PM, they us usually sell out by 2-2:30 PM easily. For the sides, I got the smoked Gouda Mac and cheese, zucchini and tomato salad, mushroom frito pie and scalloped potatoes. I was unable to unfortunately enjoy the complimentary beans as those were swimming in meat fat, so just a heads up for those who wants the beans thinking it’s vegetarian.
The mushroom frito pie was nice and smoky with the crumbled mushroom on top and I really appreciated the fresh elements of tomato and almost like a nice green goddess dressing on top to cut through the savoriness of the mushrooms. The smoked Gouda mac and cheese were delicious as it uses large shell pasta. The scalloped potatoes were also very good – smoky and surprisingly not too heavy considering scallop potatoes can often be swimming in butter. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the tomato zucchini salad with purple onions – the dressing on it was just light enough to help balance out all the heavier sides and actually honestly my favorite side because it was refreshing and had good flavor and texture. Unfortunately they were sold out of the banana pie by the time we got there so that’s what I would like to try dessert time next time.
Parking is easy with free lot in front shared with strip mall.
This is worth coming to and waiting an hour in line. Get here around 10:15.
The sides are absolutely incredible – the Mac and cheese and coleslaw especially, but the scalloped potatoes too.
We loved the duck, the pork belly, and pulled lamb.
