The waiter was super friendly. The food was great.
The calamari appetizer had so much. It was like never ending lol.
The beef carpaccio was so delicious omg wow. I am shocked at how delicious it is!
We also got a seafood poke pizza, which sounded super interesting. The first bite was a little weird but the more I ate it, the better tasting it became. I was actually really surprised at how delicious it got! Lolol.
It is pricy here but the food is delicious and I would recommend if you’re in the mood for something out of the ordinary!
Mentaiko pizza and miso carbonara are my two favorite dishes! The fruit salads are always a great appetizer , and the truffle cheese bread is loaded with different cheeses and honey.
We came for lunch with our family, and while the food itself was good, the service was lacking. After waiting to be seated, it took quite some time before anyone brought us menus. We also had to track down our server in order to place our food order.
As parents of a child with life threatening food allergies, service and communication are especially important to us. When we asked whether certain drinks were safe for our son, the response we received was simply, “It should be.” That level of uncertainty is concerning. At other Kei Concepts restaurants, staff usually ask proactively about food allergies and communicate clearly with the kitchen, which gives us confidence and peace of mind. Unfortunately, that was not the case here, and it felt as though Ini may train their staff differently.
Overall, while the food was good, it was not exceptional enough to overlook the lack of attentive and knowledgeable service. Service plays a major role in the overall dining experience, and in this case, it fell short.
Pepperoni Pizza 3/5
Out of all items consumed, this was decent, but nothing to rave about. Compared to other restaurants, it doesn’t stack highly. But it is inoffensive
Spicy Miso Carbonara 5/5
Well balanced flavor. The spice level isn’t overpowering, but is enough to complement your dish. The egg and noodles were cooked well, would recommend.
Truffle Cheese Bread 4/5
The cheeses used made the dish quite tasty and filling, though it does not taste much of truffle. For $16, I would not get every single time I come over, but it is worth a try.
Overall, INI was quite inviting. The server we had was kind and very attentive, and the food was tasty, making the cost feel more worth it than at other restaurants of similar price point.
*Calamari Fritti $10
Tiny crispy rings, simple but actually pretty good.
*Caesar Salad $10
Nothing fancy, standard Caesar, smaller portion but fresh.
*Pepperoni Pizza $12
So salty it made me chug water nonstop. Wouldn’t order this again.
*Pistachio Cannoli $8
Now this was the winner. The pistachio cream was rich, nutty, and full of flavor. I’d come back just for this dessert.
Service was great and staff was friendly.
Fun fact: their sister restaurants VOX Kitchen, ROL Hand Roll Bar, and KIN Craft Ramen & Izakaya are all in the same plaza. NEP Cafe and Kei Coffee House are close by and only SUP Noodle Bar is a bit farther from Kei’s Fountain Valley hub.
INI Ristorante (Fountain Valley Town Center)
16129 Brookhurst St, Fountain Valley, CA 92708
INI’s take on Japanese meets Italian cuisine is executed beautifully. The harmony between these different cuisines complement one another.
Our party ordered a variety of items so that we can taste a little of everything. Here is a list of all the food we ordered:
* TRUFFLE CHEESE BREAD – Absolutely exquisite! The combination of honey, truffles, ricotta cheese, mozzarella with fluffy bread was an unexpected surprise. It was great without the honey and even better once you add the honey! You MUST order this!
* CALAMARI FRITTI – This was good but it wasn’t my favorite. It’s a typical fried calamari. What I liked more were the dressed arugula that came with this appetizer.
* CAVATELLI ALLA NORCINA – When I saw this, I had to have it because it’s my favorite dish from Bestia in LA. The truffle butter mixed with Parmesan and sausage made for an unctuous bite. It was savory and comforting at the same time.
* SPICY MISO CARBONARA – I don’t usually care for carbonara but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this dish. The spicy miso cream enhanced the usually-boring udon noodles. The egg yolks lended a creamier texture. With the added shiitake mushrooms and bacon, it gave a natural umami flavor that made me enjoy slurping the noodles.
* TRUFFLE FUNGHI PIZZA – I love a great mushroom pizza and this was really good. It would be better if the arugula wasn’t so dry. It needed to be dressed the same as the arugula that came with the calamari IMO.
Other things to note:
* PARKING around the perimeter of the restaurant is limited but there are plenty of parking spots in the same plaza.
* MOUTHWASH available in the restrooms, just like they have at VOX Kitchen.
* SPACIOUS LAYOUT means there’s mobility space for walkers, wheelchairs, and strollers.
Overall, I enjoyed everything about INI Ristorante and would gladly recommend this restaurant for group outings, celebrations for family or friends, and even solo dining or take out.
The service is A+, from the warm welcome at the front to the efficient food service.
Top recommendations:
-Mentaiko Pizza
-Seafood Malfadine
-Beef Carpaccio
-Squid Ink Uni Pasta
Also worth trying:
-Umeboshi Spring Salad
-Truffle Cheese Bread
-Calamari
The restaurant is also very kid-friendly—spacious, bright, clean, and thoughtful. They even arrange seating to accommodate strollers when needed.
In the same plaza, you’ll also find two other Kei Concept restaurants—Vox and QUA. I always recommend their spots to friends visiting OC; Kei Concept never disappoints and always satisfies even the pickiest eaters.
