Went here for dinner with a group of 12. Food and service was exceptional. They have indoor and outdoor seating available. We sat inside. Great food and wine options. We started off with a salad which was good, not over powering with dressing. Ahi tower was yum perfectly seasoned. Main dish we shared the Hawaiian ahi crust which was a deconstructed sushi on a plate. Concept was good and did not disappoint. Portion of meat vs sushi rice was good. Dessert bread pudding was yummy. Warm and not very sweet. Our server was awesome and fun. He had great recommendations on food and drinks.

Every time I have gone to the Independent, I have always had exceptional service and food. The drinks and dishes were well spaced out and came out in a very timely manner. Our server, Trevor, went above and beyond to provide amazing service. You must check out this restaurant! I highly recommend the bread pudding.

this is my second time at the independent, and i will say that i love that they use fresh and local produce, and high quality meat and fish. it totally enhances the dining experience! so lets get into the details:

FOOD
if you’re an app person, HIGHLY recommend the summer caprese salad. i believe it’s seasonal, but wow.. those tomatoes were SO sweet with the perfect texture. i could’ve had a plate of those alone. the mozzarella with the fresh basil and maldon sea salt, topped with 12 year aged balsamic?! if your mouth isn’t watering reading that, go ahead and read it again the caesar had the most amazing homemade croutons & the garlic chips are out of this world. the only reason i gave 4 stars is because my salmon was overcooked; it was pretty dry and $45, that’s really unfortunate the steak was cooked perfect and the mashed potatoes were absolutely divine!

SERVICE
Jake was our server and took excellent care of us. everyone made sure our waters were never empty, and made sure we were all set throughout the night!

SEATING
lots of indoor and outdoor seating. great for small intimate couples or large parties! the outside seating area is pretty large, and was perfect for our evening.

PARKING
there’s a small lot adjacent to the restaurant but plenty of street parking and a big lot nearby!

overall, we’ll absolutely be back, and crossing our fingers (& toes!) that the caprese is still around!

Our family visited Independent restaurant for lunch while traveling back from Tahoe to San Francisco Bay Area. It exceeded our expectations! Service is great, food is crazy delicious. It was 95F outside, and we still chose patio as we were dining with our dogs. And guess what, patio has a separate AC and it was really comfortable even in that hot weather. The dishes were unique and beautiful. We ordered tuna tartar, chicken skewers and kids ordered burgers and fries. Everything was super fresh and delicious. Bloody Mary – perfect! Not too salty, not too spicy, just as it should be in a perfect world. Will definitely visit this place again.

We were recommended to dine here by a local business owner while heading back to the Bay Area from a weekend in Tahoe, and we’re so glad we stopped by! We were traveling with our two small fur babies and were looking for a place where we could enjoy a meal with our puppies.

The food was fantastic. We had the mushrooms and Thai chicken skewers for appetizers — both were excellent — and the lemon caper salmon for our main course, which was absolutely delicious. Great experience overall, and we would definitely stop here again!

Update: food has been solid and I’ve been a handful of times since the first time. Service is good but can be a little slow when there are large parties (but they are very nice and they have staff who fill water so you’re not thirsty!). My partner was stoked that they actually did a rare ribeye and really enjoyed it. Overall 5 stars!

6 years ago: Good service (thanks Maricela, hostess, and other gentlemen!). Glad we had a reservation because it was very busy when we arrived. The indoors was loud – would have tried outdoor patio except it was 104 degrees out! The food was good (rave reviews from group regarding the pork chop entree and ahi appetizer). They accommodated my food allergies and I had very nicely cooked salmon. My 6 year old ordered mac & cheese. He said it was so ugly that he wouldn’t eat it, but after the others cannibalized it he tucked in and loved it. I would definitely go back and try it again!

I took my Daughter there for her birthday because I heard many good thing about this place. Where do I start, First I think they need to google Stuffed Mushrooms, I order their stuffed mushrooms and got a plate of cut up mushrooms in a garlic sauce but no stuffing? Second I heard the Truffle Mac and Cheese was to die for – it was about a 6 out of 10, the steak was ok at best and my daughter was really disappointment. I am not a complainer and understand food cost – over 40 years experience with restaurants in areas such as Monterey and Carmel. Over all the food was medium at best and way over priced for what you get. In my line of work I meet hundred of people a week and when the name Independents I let then know about my experience and my opinion. Again this in only my opinion.

We had a wonderful date night this evening at the Independent. We started with the cheese appetizer. Blue, brie and another hard white cheese with toasted walnuts an amazing truffle honey and fruit. It was light, had amazing complimenting flavors and the presentation was fantastic.

I had the old fashioned which was one of the best I’ve ever tried. My wife had a local Chardonnay that was recommended which she enjoyed.

We both enjoyed the beef Wellington. It was cooked to a perfect medium. The pastry around it was soft buttery and crispy all at once. One guest next to us had the same and said he’s had the dish at hells kitchen and says the independents rivals or surpasses at a lower price with a heartier portion. I particularly enjoyed the vegetables that accompanied the dish. Every restaurant serves the same broccolini or cauliflower with it’s steak dishes. I was surprised to see corn, greens and peppers.

For sides my wife had the polenta, creamy and cheesey! I had the Mac and cheese which was also amazing the baked crumbs on top were crunchy and the texture combination was as great as the flavor.

We then had the most amazing pineapple coconut tart. I can’t say enough about the menu and the options. It was a fantastic evening with amazing service and I can’t wait to come back!
